Looking for a virtual vacation? It’s always amazing to explore the fantastical worlds of video games, but let’s not forget about the real-life locations that make it into some of our favourite games.

From sprawling jungles and lost temples to iconic landmarks and bustling cities, we’ve been focusing on putting together a whistle-stop virtual vacation that’ll whisk you all over the world and back.

So save yourself a plane fare and join us as we tour some of some of the world’s most amazing landmarks via some of our favourite video games…

1. Visit one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

virtual vacation assassins creed odyssey

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey does a spectacular job of immersing you in the everyday lives of the people of bygone eras, and the best part about that is that you get to visit spectacular locations as they might have looked at the time – such as the Temple of Zeus, where all the stonework has been beautifully painted in bright colours. And as if it weren’t breathtaking enough by itself already, this location also contains one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: the Statue of Zeus at Olympia. And by the way, you can check out more of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey’s locations next to their real life counterparts right here.

2. Swing between the skyscrapers of Manhattan

See them in: Marvel’s Spider-Man

Manhattan’s skyscrapers are a veritable playground for people with handy web-slinging abilities, and that means the sky is quite literally your limit. Want a better view of the city? Just run up the side of a skyscraper. Stuck in traffic en route to a tourist spot? Leave your car behind and web-sling there instead. (Not only is it faster, it’s also better for the planet.) One thing’s for sure – as Spider-Man, you’re going to get some amazing photos of the city from some pretty unique angles.

3. Uncover long-lost secrets in the Peruvian jungle

If you’re less of a culture vulture and more of an adrenaline junkie, then the deepest and darkest part of the lush Peruvian jungle is the perfect destination. Get up close and personal with local wildlife, explore forgotten tombs, and if you’re very lucky, you might even find a whole lost city hidden in amongst the trees.

4. Parkour through an iconic Pharaoh’s tomb

Another nice thing about exploring world-famous locations in video games is that nobody really minds if you start poking around off the beaten track. Venturing into the ancient Tomb of Khufu (also known as the Great Pyramid of Giza) is a definite no-no in the real world (and looting the treasure inside even more so), but since this is just a game, you can climb, jump, and parkour your way through the ancient site without any repercussions at all.

5. Hang out in the White House

virtual vacation tom clancys the division 2 capitol

If you’ve ever dreamed of visiting D.C., then this to-scale recreation of the city is probably the next best thing. If you’ve ever visited the city in real life, you can probably retrace your steps exactly, or if you’re feeling a little more daring, head inside the White House or splash about in the Washington Monument pool. The only downside is that the game’s version of the city is basically a warzone and you may find you’re a little too busy fighting for your life to do much sightseeing.

6. Step into a futuristic Prague

Many of our stops on the tour so far have taken us back in time, but this time we’ll be zipping forwards into the future. This futuristic take on Prague is filled with seemingly endless winding alleyways to follow, secrets to find, and gorgeous architecture to drool over, so make sure you set aside a full day in your schedule so you can explore it thoroughly.

7. Take a hike to the London Eye

See it in: Watch Dogs Legion

Technically, this is a near-future version of London, but it looks so similar to the present day city that you could probably take a virtual tour and see exactly the same sights that you would in a real life version. Take a wander past the London Eye, the Houses of Parliament, Camden Market, and Trafalgar Square – just watch out in case you run into a little old lady named Helen

So there you have it – 7 amazing locations to visit in some equally amazing games. Head over to GAME to keep feeding your globetrotting bug, or look for an even more obscure location to visit (there are quite a few interesting options in space, we’re told).
