Travelling the world is a little bit difficult right now. But thankfully, the miracle of modern technology known as video games still allows you to jet off and explore the most amazing places in the world for as long as you feel like, with no pesky hotel rates or dodgy travel Wi-Fi, and all from the comfort of your sofa. It’s not quite the same as the real thing, but we’re willing to bet the virtual version opens doors to some far more interesting places.

So sit back, fasten your seatbelt, and try not to zone out for the safety briefing as you set off on our whistlestop tour of the world, all through the medium of video games.

1. United Kingdom

The first stop on our tour probably isn’t that far away from your place to begin with, but we have to start somewhere. Take a hike through a quaint, sun-dappled, and quintessentially English town somewhere in Shropshire, as you try to figure out why the whole town’s population seems to have disappeared off the face of the Earth.

2. Italy

video game world tour assassins creed 2 italy

This one’s a whistlestop tour of Italy in itself, as you get to visit Florence, Monteriggioni, Forlì, San Gimignano, The Vatican City, and Venice. Make sure to do the tourist thing in-between your Assassin job by visiting all the major sightseeing attractions, like the gorgeous Duomo in Florence or riding a gondola in Venice. Just… maybe don’t go climbing the buildings or assassinating people when you visit Italy for real.

3. Norway

Visit in: God of War

video game world tour god of war norway

Alright, so maybe the real Norway isn’t full of gods and trolls and scary Valkyries, but we’re convinced the mountains and forests in real life are just as stunning as they are in God of War. We’re also pretty sure you could hire a rowboat and go scooting around on the surface of a lake telling stories to your travel buddies, so it probably gives you a pretty authentic experience.

4. Russia

Visit in: Metro Exodus

In real life, Russia is not overrun with radiation and scary mutated monsters, but it is snowy, scenic, and utterly beautiful. Artyom travels through these stunning landscapes by train, and that seems like a pretty neat idea in real life too.

5. Japan

If you’re brave enough to venture off the beaten track in the stunning world of Sekiro (come on, you’re a ninja now, you need to be brave), you’ll find hidden temples, bamboo groves, vast echoing canyons, snow-capped mountains, and vast castles. Quite a few monsters too, but like we said, you’re a ninja. Handle it.

But if you really can’t, check out the neon-lit streets of Tokyo in the Yakuza series instead.

Visit in: Shenmue III

7. Australia

Visit in: Mad Max

video game world tour mad max australia

Post-apocalyptic future Australia, according to the first movie in the series, but it’s still extremely hot and filled with scary bugs, and if you’re there for the breathtaking scenery rather than a mad dash across the desert in search of petrol and water, you’re sure to have a relaxing stay. Seriously, though, Australia’s gorgeous.

8. The United States

When it comes to games set in the US, you’re pretty spoiled for choice. We’ve settled for Life is Strange 2, however, because the journey of the Diaz brothers will take you from beautiful Oregon, where the fictional Arcadia Bay is (or was) set, all the way down to Mexico just in time to start off the next portion of your journey. Also, the story’s beautiful and will almost certainly make you cry.

9. South America

Start out in Mexico and venture deep into the Amazon jungle to search for lost Inca cities and ancient tombs. While we don’t actually condone tomb raiding in real life, this one’s an amazing adventure to finish off your video game world tour with a bang.
