We reckon video game cover art can be just as iconic as their gorgeous soundtracks, clever story twists, and headstrong heroes, and it’s about time we showed the artwork a bit of appreciation.

So without further ado, let’s take a look at a selection of iconic artworks that have graced the covers of amazing games.

1. Final Fantasy VII Remake

Let’s start with an iconic cover for an iconic game. We adore the updated version of the original artwork, with all the tiny details like the wear and tear on Cloud’s famous Buster Sword, and the recreation of Midgar’s iconic buildings. It’s a perfect nostalgia nod to fans of the original while still being a visually striking design in its own right.

2. Breath of the Wild

Who could look at this and not immediately want to go exploring those stunning mountains under that gorgeous blue sky? We’ll also give bonus points to the US version of the cover art, which strikes a slightly more dramatic tone with its moody skies and shadowy aesthetic. Speaking of moody Zelda stuff, we can’t wait to see what the cover art for the Breath of the Wild sequel looks like. We got major Majora’s Mask vibes from the trailer.

3. Death Stranding

Much like the game and its most mysterious details, this cover art raises many deep and existential questions that we just don’t know the answer to. Why is Norman Reedus so amazing? Why is he covered in mud? Is he crying? If so, is he crying because he’s covered in mud, or because he knows how amazing he is?

4. Ōkami

A beautiful inkbrush art style, a wolf that manages to look both fearsome and adorable… and bonus points because the game’s graphics actually look just like this when you play. Incidentally, did you know that the game’s title is a pun in Japanese? It’s actually a homophone for both “wolf” and “great god”. Pun-derful.

5. Shadow of the Colossus

In case you were left in any doubt from the name “Colossi”, the big baddies in this game are truly, er, colossal. And that’s exactly what this artwork manages to encapsulate: namely, you are a mere bug by comparison, and you are probably going to get squashed. Seriously, you barely come up to this thing’s ankle. Why would you even try to fight monsters that big?

6. No Man’s Sky

You might expect the cover art for a space exploration game to give you a Star Wars-esque shot of the stars, maybe a flaming comet or two, and probably a rocket ship. No Man’s Sky’s PS4 artwork focuses instead on the sort of place you might be exploring: a lush planet with pink grass, curious alien beasties, and the pale edge of a distant planet just visible in the sky. It’s a very pastel colour scheme for a space game, and we love it.
