In many games, you reach the final castle and are kept so busy fighting bosses, hoarding piles of loot, and rescuing hapless kidnappees that you probably don’t have a lot of time to spend admiring the stonework.

But we think that’s a criminal waste, because a lot of video game castles could be prime contenders for the most prestigious architecture awards you can think of.

But we think that’s a criminal waste, because a lot of video game castles could be prime contenders for the most prestigious architecture awards you can think of.

So next time you’re on a video game adventure, put the slaughtering and maiming on hold for ten minutes, take the scenic route instead, and admire the sheer effort that the evil minions put into building their evil overlord’s lair of shadow and darkness.

Okay, so Princess Peach definitely isn’t here, but let’s not overlook this architectural gem. It’s got all the hallmarks of a proper fairytale castle: solid walls, crenellated battlements, and nice symmetrical towers – and let’s not forget the flickering torch mood lighting and inbuilt fireworks display that goes off every time you walk through the front door.

2. Castle Oblivion

If you’re going to live in a castle, might as well go for one that defies all the normal rules of physics, right? We’re not quite sure how you get to the bits on the side – or if everything’s the right way up when you eventually get there – but hey, 10/10 on the Grand Designs front.

3. Ashina Castle

If you’re going for a style statement, Ashina Castle has it in buckets. It’s got sweeping tiled pagoda roofs, sliding shoji doors, twisty-turny corridors to put off all but the most determined unwelcome visitors, and enough staircases to take care of your daily exercise quota in an hour.

4. Baroness Von Bon Bon’s castle

The good news: it’s made of cake, cream, candy, and all manner of tasty treats. The bad news: it wants to eat you, not the other way around. Visit if you dare.

5. Lothric Castle

Castles are usually pretty big, we grant you. But the architects of Lothric Castle really pushed the boat out, building a dramatic fortress that could probably house every single person who ever played Dark Souls, with rooms to spare for all the bosses too. Let’s just hope they all live in a different wing, though. Those are some roommates we don’t need.

6. Château d’Ombrage

The fact that it’s in ruins probably doesn’t help, but with such a bleak and forbidding appearance, rooms full of ingenious contraptions that are suspiciously useful for keeping large numbers of plague rats at bay, and a name that translates to Castle of Shadows, it makes you wonder what on earth the original owner of the castle was thinking of when they built the place.

7. The Nest

Visitors with vertigo, look away now. But if dizzying drops, towering spires, and razor-thin bridges are your thing, you could probably move in tomorrow. Just watch out for the minor giant electric cat-bird infestation on the roof.
