Live out your seafaring dreams in these 6 nautical games

ames where you get your own boat sea of thieves

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from our many collective years of gaming, it’s that games that give you your own boat are one of the very best things since sliced bread. Which is part of the reason why we got so excited when we saw the trailer for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Quite apart from all the amazing facial hair, we’ll be getting our very own longship in which to explore Dark Ages England (and a bit of Norway, too).

So with that in mind, let’s take a look back at a selection of games that let you mess around in your very own boat, whether you’re a professional pirate, nefarious naval warmonger, or you just use your boat for quality family bonding time.

1. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

You’re a Viking, so it makes perfect sense for you to get your own longship. It’ll carry you from the chilly beaches of Norway to the lush landscapes of Dark Ages England, but don’t think that’s all you’ll be using it for. The fastest way to travel in the Dark Ages is by river, as they haven’t figured out tarmac roads yet, so you’ll be sailing through England’s various kingdoms in your longship, carrying out raids on waterside forts for resources, exploring, and just generally being a bit of a pest.

2. Sea of Thieves

Who wouldn’t want to be a pirate? Depending on the size of your crew, you can go from a tiny one-person sloop to a full-sized pirate galleon, but they’re all a joy to sail. That’s assuming your crewmates are helping and not too busy firing themselves out of cannons or playing sea shanties while you try to single-handedly fend off a passing kraken, of course. As an added bonus, you can bring along a rowboat and have two boats instead of one.

3. God of War

games where you get your own boat god of war rowboat

Sometimes you just want a break from slaying enormous monsters and battling with gods. Get some quality family time with your son (and Mimir, who tells amazing stories so doesn’t quite qualify as a third wheel) as you row peacefully around an enormous lake inhabited by one of the heftiest monsters in gaming.

4. Final Fantasy XV

This one’s probably the most high-tech boat on the list, plus it’s got room for your car in the hold, so it’s also extremely handy when you’re on a road trip that spans multiple kingdoms. Drop anchor for a quick spot of fishing, sail over to Angelgard for a close encounter with the gods, or follow flocks of birds to find one of the biggest creatures in the game. Oh, and you’ll get some thoroughly stupid (and utterly wonderful) boat-themed poses from the boys when you check out Prompto’s photos at the end of the day.

5. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

We’re back to Assassin’s Creed again (they’ve also got pirate ships in Black Flag, so full marks for variety). You can decorate your trireme with all manner of fancy sails and figureheads, and use it to explore the islands or engage in full-on naval warfare with your bad guys of choice.

6. Subnautica

games where you get your own boat subnautica seamoth submarine

We’re counting a submarine as a boat because if you wanted to, you technically could sail it on the ocean surface. It’s just an added bonus that this one sinks on purpose. You can build multiple submarine classes in Subnautica to help you feel better about facing the alien denizens of the deep, but our favourite is probably the cute little Seamoth, a dinky round bubble of a sub. It doesn’t dive very deep, but boy will you look adorable doing it.
