Gaming’s Greatest Aliens

best video game aliens alien isolation xenomorph

Exploring the depths of space is one of our all-time favourite things to do in games: we get a neat spaceship to fly around in, we get to explore whole new planets and star systems – and best of all, we get to meet aliens.

Okay, so some of them aren’t all that friendly, but others are pretty cute and cuddly, and in most cases, we can forgive them for trying to eat us because it’s so utterly cool to hang out with an extraterrestrial pal. Why haven’t we found any aliens in real life yet?

1. The Xenomorph

best video game aliens alien isolation the xenomorph

Probably the scariest alien on the list, and certainly one of the most iconic. Watching the Xenomorph stalking hapless spacefarers on TV while you’re shouting at them not to be so gosh darn stupid is one thing, but when you’re the hapless spacefarer it’s very, very difficult not to be stupid when you’re in a blind panic. The wily Xenomorph watches and even seems to learn from you over the course of the game, so the more often you get away in one piece, the harder it becomes to do it again.

2. Headcrabs

These scuttling four-legged creatures are pretty darn iconic too, and they’re actually kind of cute when they’re not suckering themselves onto your skull and trying to feed on your brain.
They’ll be making a return in Half-Life: Alyx, so if you’re a little out of practice on recognising Half-Life aliens, make sure to get up to speed on the plot of Half-Life before you start playing.

3. Aliens

Ahh, what a pleasant starry night. Perfect weather for some stargazing. Or at least, it seemed like a good idea until your Sim got abruptly abducted by aliens, disappeared for a few hours having a grand old time (we assume?), and then came back with a half-alien baby on the way. Guess having the headmaster over for dinner has to wait, then…?

4. Mimics

best video game aliens prey mimic

There are a few types of Typhon to watch out for in Prey, but our favourite is probably the humble Mimic. They’re relatively weak, but they love playing hide and seek by transforming into bits of furniture and then popping out at the last minute to surprise you. Hmm… did that chair just move?

5. The scary hexagon

best video game aliens observation the hexagon

Is it an alien, or some sort of higher life form? We’re actually not sure. It’s a floating hexagon that’s a million times scarier than any simple 2D shape has any right to be, and it’s apparently hyper-intelligent too, with motives that are far too big for our measly human brains to ever understand. It’s giving us the creeps just thinking about it.

6. The Sea Emperor

best video game aliens subnautica sea emperor

Subnautica is very good at surprising you with extremely large aliens (actually, some of the smallest ones could probably take a few years off your life too). But the Sea Emperor is our favourite, because of one particular bit where she just comes out of nowhere to lean on the wall and watch you flail around like the tiny ant you are by comparison. But she doesn’t immediately try to eat you, and that makes her a friend in our books.

7. Slimes

The very best kind of aliens are the cute and cuddly kind, and slimes fit that description to a T. They’re round and squishy, some of them glow in the dark, and all of them think it’s great fun being fired at top speed out of a reverse-vacuum gun, which is probably just as well because we do it to them every day. Even when they’re stacking themselves up against the wall of their pen for their sixty-fourth escape attempt in as many minutes, we still think they’re adorable.
