What’s the most underrated game ever made? Everyone can probably think of at least one game that was really, really good, but which never quite got the recognition it deserved – and that’s why we turned to you for your suggestions.

So without further ado, here are seven amazing but underrated games, as voted by you. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show as they finally get their moment in the limelight…

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

Ninja Theory are best known for the spectacular Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, as well as the superb reimagining of Devil May Cry. However their most underrated title is arguably 2010’s Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, a sprawling action-adventure game set in a lush post-apocalyptic world. The game’s combat and exploration are solid, but what stands out even more is the story, featuring the acting talents of Andy Serkis.

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst

underrated games mirrors edge catalyst

Arriving eight years after the original, Catalyst not only managed to faithfully recreate the excellent first-person platforming that made Mirror’s Edge a sleeper hit, but also accomplished the tricky feat of making that gameplay fit seamlessly into an open-world structure. It’s still breathtaking to leap across the gleaming rooftops of the city of Glass, gloriously rendered in DICE’s Frostbite engine, to the excellent soundtrack provided by Solar Fields.

Nier

underrated games nier

Cerebral hack and slash RPG Nier: Automata was a well-deserved hit, but its predecessor never enjoyed the same level of mainstream success. This is a massive shame because the original is just as weird and wonderful as the 2017 follow-up. The story lays some of the groundwork for Automata, but in true Nier fashion, it’s delightfully bizarre in all the best ways.

Driver: San Francisco

underrated games driver san francisco

While other open-world games were striving for complete realism, Driver: San Francisco gleefully embraced the surreal, presenting one of the goofiest setups for a racing game ever. The game sees the series protagonist John Tanner placed in a coma and subsequently, he gains the ability to control any vehicle he pleases – within the confines of the northern Californian city. Despite its ridiculousness, Driver: San Francisco is riotous fun, allowing you to play with cars in some totally unique ways.

John Woo Presents: Stranglehold

If it’s silliness you’re after, look no further than the video game debut of martial arts legend John Woo. This third-person shooter developed by Midway Games saw the implementation of a mechanic called ‘Tequila Time’ (named after the games’ protagonist, Inspector Tequila), which allowed the player to enter slow-motion and pick off targets in Woo’s trademark style.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron

underrated games transformers fall of cybertron

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is the game that fans deserved. By choosing to set the game years before the events of Michael Bay’s movie saga, developers High Moon Studios were able to craft a compelling storyline in an entirely original campaign, that allowed players to take control of some dizzying robot on robot violence. The game even included some solid multiplayer modes, as well as a Horde-style mode, Escalation.

Titanfall 2

underrated games titanfall 2

Staying on the robot theme, we would be remiss to not mention the cult classic that is Titanfall 2. In a year that saw the release of mammoth FPS titles like Overwatch, Doom, Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, TF2 was somewhat overlooked but has attracted a dedicated following in the years since release. Titanfall 2 brought over the dynamic multiplayer offering of the original and added a thrilling campaign packed full of jaw-dropping moments that we still can’t get over three years later. If you’re a fan of Apex Legends, you owe it to yourself to play this game now!
