7 of the scariest enemies in The Last of Us, ranked

After getting a glimpse of some of the enemies we’ll be fighting in The Last of Us Part II in May’s State of Play (you can catch it here if you missed it), it got us reminiscing about the amazing original The Last of Us and its terrifying enemies. Incidentally, we also made a handy recap of the plot if you want a quick refresher before the sequel arrives on 19 June.

But just be warned: if you’ve not played The Last of Us yet, then first, go away right now and play it, and second, there are story spoilers from the first game ahead. You’re safe from spoilers for The Last of Us Part II, though we can’t promise you won’t get a little grossed out by the memory of some of these Infected. Ugh.

7. That soldier at the beginning

So this guy shot Sarah in one of the most heartbreaking (but utterly amazing) intros in gaming, and why? Just because someone told him to, even though Joel pretty emphatically told him they weren’t infected, which means there was ultimately no purpose whatsoever in him doing it. Seven years on, we still haven’t forgiven him.

6. Stalkers

Stalkers might not be the strongest type of Infected in the game, but that doesn’t mean they’re a pushover. They’re fast, stealthy, like to hunt in packs, and have a horrible habit of ambushing you in dark corners.

5. Fireflies

For most of the game, we didn’t really consider these guys our enemies. They’re the ones trying to make a cure to save the world, after all. But then that shocking twist at the end left us with no choice but to cut them down one by one as they tried to stop us saving Ellie’s life. Yeah, so we were technically the final bad guy at this point, but who could honestly say they wouldn’t have moved mountains to save Ellie too?

4. Clickers

Ugh. Just ugh. That horrible clicky sound they make and the way they weave around like they’re on a ship in a thunderstorm makes our skin crawl. Also, they hear everything. It’s not fair how good their hearing is, given the general dilapidation of their skulls.

3. Bloaters

What do you get if you take a deadly Infected, chuck some extra mould at it and let it solidify into armour, then give it a few bags of poisonous toxins to throw around too? A whole lot of bad news, that’s what. Gross.

2. David

Yeah, this guy. This absolute stinker of a human being very nearly took the top spot for trying to slice Ellie into bits and eat her, among other things. So yep, we’re ranking a single human higher than the very grossest Infected on the list. Just think about that for a minute.

1. The cordyceps fungus

We all know who the real enemy is here. If not for this terrifying real-life fungus (no, seriously, it’s real, but at least it hasn’t done the zombie thing to humans… yet) then chances are all the saddest bits from the original game wouldn’t have happened at all. Though actually, come to think of it, that would mean that Joel would never have met Ellie…

So there you have it – some of the very scariest enemies in the original The Last of Us. This time around, there’ll be new bad humans to watch out for, from the Washington Liberation Front to the cultist Seraphites, at least one new type of Infected, and a ton of adorable dogs who just want to tear us to shreds. Now, generally speaking we’re overjoyed to see dogs in video games, but it looks like we might have no choice but to hurt these ones if we want to survive to see the end of the game. We might never recover.
