Set a few years after the events of the original The Last of Us, the sequel continues the story of Ellie, who’s now nineteen and living in relative safety in Jackson, Wyoming along with grumpy adoptive dad Joel. But this is The Last of Us, which means scary and often heartbreaking twists are guaranteed. Before long, a mysterious, “traumatising” incident leaves the commune’s peace shattered, setting Ellie on the warpath in search of justice.

She’ll be travelling from snowy Jackson to the lush Pacific Midwest, so you can expect her journey to span several seasons, just like the first game, as well as a ton of new places we’ve not visited before. These locations are based on real cities, and Naughty Dog have been working hard to make them feel authentic.

Most of the action will take place in Seattle, in a former quarantine zone that was once run by the military. Two factions are vying for control there now: the heavily-armed Washington Liberation Front, and a religious cult known interchangeably as the Seraphites and the Scars, the latter nickname referring to the cultists’ self-inflicted wounds. And actually, we’ve seen them around before…

The WLF are the ones who use dogs to hunt you down, and they’re more likely to engage you in a loud open attack. The dogs can lead their owners straight to you, so make use of Listen Mode to keep an eye on the scent trail you leave behind you. The Seraphites, meanwhile, favour camouflage, silent weapons, and all-round sneakiness, so you’ll need a different technique to deal with each faction.

Naturally, there’s also the Infected to deal with. The video showed off a new type of Infected called Shamblers, which spew out clouds of corrosive spores if you get too close, and you’ll recognise some of the other Infected types from the first game. There’s also another new type, the details of which remains a secret for now. Oh, apart from that blood-curdling shriek. That’s the only hint we’ve had. Fortunately, much like in Days Gone, you’ll sometimes be able to trick the humans and Infected into fighting each other while you mosey on by.

Ellie’s also learned a few new tricks over the years, and not just how to play the guitar like a pro. She’s finally learned how to swim, but she can also dive, jump, crawl, climb, scale terrain with a climbing rope, swing across gaps, sail through waterlogged streets in a boat, parry enemies’ attacks, and use them as human shields.

Crafting has had an upgrade too, with new workbenches allowing you to visualise salvaged parts on weapons prior to modifying them. You can also tailor your skill upgrades to suit your preferred fighting style.

And that leaves us with just one final easter egg which you might not have spotted. At one point in the video, Ellie grabs an unsuspecting enemy from behind in order to threaten her, ripping out her earphones as she’s in the middle of playing… who’d have guessed it: Hotline Miami on the PS Vita. Here’s hoping Ellie steals said PS Vita and gets to play it in quieter moments.
