We love Jill Valentine, Leon S Kennedy, and all the other charming Resident Evil heroes, but let’s face it, these undeniably affable characters are almost always overshadowed by the series’ terrifying line-up of spine-chilling villains.

6. Ramon Salazar

First appearance: Resident Evil 4
Fear rating: Mild distress

Salazar - RE4

Although he might not be the scariest, Salazar certainly nabs the title of strangest Resident Evil villain. This pint-sized evildoer unleashed the Las Plagas in a bid for world domination before being handily thwarted by everyone’s favourite rookie cop, Leon.

5. Jack Baker

First appearance: Resident Evil VII: Biohazard
Fear rating: Strong creeps

Jack Baker - Resident Evil 7

As the most ‘intimate’ game in the series, Resident Evil VII: Biohazard swapped its giant monsters for arguably more terrifying baddies – human beings. As well as being the psychopathic patriarch of the twisted Baker family, Jack has been imbued with powers of regeneration and superhuman strength as a result of a sinister mutation that takes hold of him.

4. Albert Wesker

First appearance: Resident Evil
Fear rating: Thoroughly spooked

Wesker - RE5

Wesker is the mastermind behind the evil Umbrella Corporation and the over-arching big-bad of the Resident Evil series. Although he initially appears as a somewhat normal human man (albeit one with an unhealthy obsession with The Matrix film series), Wesker is every bit as sadistic as the monsters he helped create. In Resident Evil 5, we get to see Wesker in his monstrous form and suffice it to say, it was not a pretty sight.

3. William Birkin

First appearance: Resident Evil 2
Fear rating: Hiding-behind-the-couch fear

William Birkin - Resident Evil 2

Although arguably not as powerful as Wesker, William Birkin gets a higher spot on our list due simply to his utterly horrifying appearance in the Resident Evil 2 remake. By the time we get to face Birkin in battle, his body has been transformed, causing him to grow huge extra arms with deadly claws. The only comfort this hulking monster can give is that he has a pretty obvious weak spot (hint: shoot the eyes).

2. Mr X

First appearance: Resident Evil 2
Fear rating: Oh no, my heart

Mr X Resident Evil 2

T-00, or as he’s usually called, Mr. X, is a cold, almost-unstoppable brute. This muscle-bound Tyrant dogs your steps throughout Resident Evil 2, hell-bent on destroying every last trace of evidence of the Raccoon City incident. If you’re scared stiff by Mr. X, try lightening the mood by shooting his hat off. He won’t cease his pursuit to recover his fedora, but we reckon he looks significantly less threatening with his bald head exposed.

1. Nemesis

First appearance: Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
Fear rating: Indescribable terror

Nemesis RE3

Of course, the top spot on our list could be none other than the hair-raising Nemesis. This towering titan of terror is an offshoot of the Tyrant Project that produced Mr. X, but unlike his trench coat clad predecessor, Nemesis has retained the intelligence of his host. That means he’s smart enough to aim a massive rocket launcher directly at your cowering form. Nemesis hasn’t stopped haunting our nightmares since his first appearance back in 1999, and now he’s more powerful than ever, capable of breaking into Safe Rooms to pulverise our heroes!
