Capcom surprised us all when dropping the reveal trailer for the Resident Evil 3 remake. Fans of the survival horror series will be delighted to revisit the 1999 classic but terrified at the idea of having to deal with the Nemesis once again.

Capcom are looking for this to be more of a remix than the Resident Evil 2 remake. Story elements may be tweaked and characters changed slightly. How will that play out? We’ve had a close look at the trailer to see what we could learn.

Capcom are looking for this to be more of a remix than the Resident Evil 2 remake. Story elements may be tweaked and characters changed slightly. How will that play out? We’ve had a close look at the trailer to see what we could learn.

It’s still a prequel and a sequel

One thing that won’t be changing in the Resident Evil 3 remake is the timescale. The original game was set slightly before the events in Resident Evil 2 and continued on after to tie up the whole story of the outbreak in Raccoon City.

The footage shown in the trailer confirms that this will be the case in the remake. We’ll be following Jill Valentine as she tries to escape from the bioweapon known as Nemesis that’s trying to hunt her down. It should make for a more action-oriented sequel than the horror-focused Resident Evil 2.

Minor characters play a bigger role

Jill talks to lots of minor characters in the trailer which suggests they’ll be more integral to the plot. Many of them are part of the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service (UBCS), a military force trying to contain the zombie virus after being partly responsible for its outbreak. The main one is Carlos, who joins Jill to help her out for a large part of the campaign.

We also briefly see Dario Rosso, who helps Jill at the beginning of the game by letting her into an abandoned warehouse. His tale is a tragic one as he’s looking for his family across the city. No doubt Capcom will expand his role like they did Robert Kendo in the Resident Evil 2 remake.

Hunters are back

As if the Nemesis wasn’t enough. In the first Resident Evil, Jill faced lizard-human experiments known as Hunters that are most recognisable by their large claws. A more advanced version of them appeared in the original Resident Evil 3 and it looks like they’ll be back in the remake.

Capcom have actually confirmed this will be the case but says the Hunters have been reimagined to fit the modern gameplay. That probably means they’re even more menacing and will be a lot harder to deal with.

Jill’s infection is explored more

At one point in the trailer, we see Jill talking to herself in the mirror before her reflection turns into a zombie version of herself. This is a scene that wasn’t in the original game but we can guess at what it might be about.

Jill does actually get infected by a strain of the virus at a certain point in Resident Evil 3. We won’t say too much but it looks like there could be dream sequences that play into the horror of Jill’s infection. It was barely explored in the original so it’d be interesting to see where Capcom goes with that.

It has a multiplayer mode

It turns out that Project Resistance is actually the multiplayer mode that comes with Resident Evil 3. Capcom kept that a secret until this trailer. The Resistance mode is a 4v1 game in which four survivors fight against a fifth player who is the Mastermind.

The Mastermind is able to lay traps and control the monsters to try to stop the survivors escaping. It’s a welcome addition to Resident Evil 3 that should give it plenty of life beyond the campaign.
