1. How to view hidden trophies
This is the trick that caused such a stir among PS4 owners across the globe, despite the fact that it’s technically written on the trophies screen (but admittedly in pretty tiny writing, and the tip also hasn’t always been there, so don’t feel too bad if it’s new to you). You’ll sometimes come across hidden trophies as you scroll through the list – but if you don’t want to leave unlocking them to random chance or a time-consuming Google search, you can simply hit square to find out what the trophy is right away. This is especially useful for hidden trophies that change the way you play. Use this trick with caution though, as many hidden trophies are kept secret because they contain spoiler-worthy content. And nobody likes spoilers.
2. How to switch between the last two apps you used
This is a super handy trick that cuts out the need to return to the home screen and scroll aaaaall the way along to something you were using just a minute ago. Instead, just double tap the PS button, and you can toggle between the last two apps you used as many times as you like. Easy peasy.
3. How to easily play PS4 audio through a speaker
If you’ve ever struggled with figuring out which of the endless cables under your desk is supposed to go where to make the sound work properly, then this one’s for you. As long as you’ve got a simple aux cable, you can simply plug one end into your speaker and the other end into your controller, and voila! Instant sound.
4. How to zoom in
Instead of getting up to scrutinise that scrawly handwriting on that note you found, you can zoom in your screen without having to move much at all. Press the PS button and square together, and then use either stick or the directional buttons to move the zoomed-in area around. You’ll need to enable this option first in your settings, mind, but there’s a whole host of other handy accessibility settings to choose from, so have a little explore and see what you can find.
5. How to turn on your TV alongside your PS4
Why press two buttons when you could press one? You’ll need to go back into your settings and enable the HDMI Device link. Then you’ll just need to turn on your PS4 as normal and your TV will turn on alongside it. Not all TVs will be able to do this, but it’s worth giving it a shot.
6. How to make screenshotting easier
One of the PS4’s best features is the ability to grab screenshots and video clips on the fly. However, when the action of a game is flowing, you can’t always pause to bring up the Share menu. To speed up this process, you can simply hold down the Share button to instantly capture a screenshot. If you want to begin capturing video, just double-tap the Share button. You can also customise the settings of your Share button so that tapping the button once instantly takes a screenshot, and holding the button down brings up the menu. Just hop into Share Settings and change the Share Button Control Type to Easy Screenshots. And if you’re looking for stunning games to snap some pics in, check out these 4K beauties.
7. How to control your music in-game
If you use Spotify to play tunes while you’re gaming, then listen up. Most music fans will know that you can hold down the PS button to bring up the in-game menu, from which you can adjust Spotify’s volume and skip tracks, but did you know that you can also control the tunes from your phone? If you’re playing Spotify on your PS4, hop into the app on your phone and you should see the option to continue playing your music through the PS4. You can now change your music on the go, without suspending your game to open the Spotify app on the PS4. Looking for some chill tracks to accompany your gaming sessions? We recommend the Final Fantasy soundtracks, especially good for making those Doom sessions a little less intense. For more music inspiration, here are some of our favourite video game tunes.
