Attention, Pokémon fans – especially the hangry among you! A new Galar Research Update has dropped today, giving us a tantalising taste of some of the new features heading to Pokémon Sword and Shield.

New Pokémon

Let’s start with some of the new Pokémon you will encounter in the Galar region. First up is a cuddly yet irritable creature named Morpeko.

Morpeko is a two-sided Pokémon, whose moves are determined by its ability, Hunger Switch. It generates electricity in its cheeks by consuming berries, but when it gets hungry, it changes into a dark form, switching from electric-type to a dark-type. This also changes the type of its signature move, Aura Wheel.

If you want to keep Morpeko happy, make sure you keep a few snacks to hand…

Galarian Forms

In Pokémon Sun and Moon, some of our favourite Pokémon got makeovers with the region-specific Alolan forms. This popular feature returns in Sword and Shield with Galarian forms, which give a distinctly British flair to some old classics.

The first Pokémon to get the Galarian treatment is Weezing, who gets a spiffing top hat that doubles as a chimney to spout its toxic fumes. Zigzagoon and its evolution Linoone are getting a badger-style makeover, as well as an all-new evolution, Obstagoon.

New Rivals

On top of all these new monsters, we’ve also got confirmation of the new rivals that we will be competing against in Galar. The first is Bede, a young chap who we see fighting on some desert-like terrain. Bede has joined the Gym Challenge having received an endorsement from the chairman of the Galar League, meaning he is sure to be a formidable opponent.

Your female competitor is Marnie, who looks to be a young fashionista and travels with a Morpeko by her side. Marnie aims to be the Champion of the Galar region, battling her way to the top with calm, calculated battle strategies.

New Villains

Following in the footsteps of Team Rocket as your villains in Sword and Shield is an intimidating gang of punks called Team Yell. These hooligans are wild fans of Marnie and are sure to cause some serious havoc for anyone who gets in her way.

Team Yell look like they are inspired by old-school punk rockers. We see them in the trailer blowing vuvuzela-style horns, and they even have their own Pokéballs that emit a creepy green gas.
