Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra release dates

Both the Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra expansions are included in the same expansion pass, which you can pre-order right now at GAME. The Isle of Armor content is scheduled to arrive by the end of June 2020, while The Crown Tundra content will arrive later, sometime during autumn 2020.

You’ll need to specify which version of the game you own (either Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield) when you redeem the code in the Nintendo eShop. Make sure you select the right one, because the Pokémon Sword Expansion Pass isn’t compatible with Pokémon Shield, and vice versa.

What’s included in Isle of Armor

A new mentor
While the new region of Galar is undeniably beautiful (it’s got beaches, forests, caves, and sand dunes to explore), you’re not going to the Isle of Armor for a holiday. Instead, you’ll become the apprentice of dojo master Mustard, who also happens to be a former Champion and legendary Pokémon Trainer.

A new rival
You’ll be meeting a new rival, too, though who you run into depends on which version of the game you’ve got. Owners of Pokémon Sword will run into Poison-type Klara, while owners of Pokémon Shield will be facing Psychic-type Avery.

New Pokémon
There’ll be plenty of new and returning Pokémon to catch, though only one has been shown off so far: the Fighting-type Pokémon Kubfu. This diminutive little fighter can evolve into two versions of Ushifu: either Single Strike Style Urshifu (Fighting/Dark), or Rapid Strike Style Urshifu (Fighting/Water). Which version you end up getting will depend on the choices you make throughout the game, rather than being based on your ownership of Sword or Shield.

Oh, and needless to say – both Urshifu evolutions have Gigantamax forms. And speaking of…

Gigantamax forms of the three starters
Your cuddly little starter Pokémon has stuck by you through thick and thin, and now it’s time to train it to a whole new level. In Isle of Armor, you’ll be able to get Gigantamax forms of your starters.

Lots of exciting loot
Naturally, you’ll get a style makeover with a snazzy new training outfit, but there’s a ton of new hairstyles and outfits to choose from too. And there’ll be new items to get your mitts on as well, like the handy Exp. Charm to make training up your Pokémon a breeze.

A new battle style
Shake up your routine by setting conditions and rules in the new Restricted Sparring battles. You can restrict which Pokémon types you can use, or set battle conditions to perfectly suit that poor little Nickit that’s been sat in storage ever since you caught it two months ago. Perfect excuse to try out some of those new tutor moves that are included with the expansion.

What’s included in The Crown Tundra

You’ve got a job to do
You’re headed to The Crown Tundra to lead an exploration team, so as you might expect, this expansion is all about exploring the unknown. As you traverse the wintry mountains, look out for the tight-knit communities scattered around, as well as remote temples and other unique landmarks.

Pokémon Dens got a whole lot more exciting
Remember the Pokémon Dens from Max Raid Battles? Now you can venture inside them with your fellow Trainers, where you’ll be in with a chance of discovering rare Legendary Pokémon.

Look out for a brand new Legendary Pokémon
There’ll be tons of new Pokémon to look out for, though they’re all being kept a secret for now. One that we have seen a glimpse of is new Legendary Calyrex, a Psychic/Grass-type Pokémon which supposedly once ruled Galar and can see the past, present, and future…

Even more loot
You’re going to need to dress up warm, so you’ll be getting exploration attire. There’ll be plenty more items and clothes to get your mitts on too.

There are freebies even if you don’t buy the expansion pass

Still making up your mind? You can get a sneak preview of the new content (and a new Galarian Slowpoke) by heading to Wedgehurst Station once you’ve downloaded the latest game update. There you’ll encounter the relevant rival (Klara for Sword, and Avery for Shield) for your version of the game. A Galarian Slowpoke will wander in and you’ll be able to try catching it, though you won’t be able to evolve it just yet.

That’s not all though – there’ll be over 100 familiar Pokémon on their way to Sword and Shield when Isle of Armor arrives, and over 100 more returning Pokémon when The Crown Tundra arrives. You’ll have to buy the expansions in order to catch them, or if you’re very lucky, you might be able to get them in a trade from someone who’s bought the expansions already.

Head here to get your mitts on the new expansion pass, and happy exploring!
