Oninaki, the next classic-style JRPG from Tokyo RPG Factory, got a release date during Square Enix’s E3 2019 press conference. It will be out on 22 August, 2019 for PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
The studio previously made I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear, which are similar titles, with the major difference being the combat system. Rather than use an active time battle system – which sees characters waiting an allotted time before they can attack – Oninaki’s combat plays out in real-time. You press a button and your character will attack. Simple.
You play as a Watcher called Kagachi who manages the divide between the living world and the dead world. It seems you’ll be trying to rid both worlds of grief as it shackles the living and prevents reincarnation.
Due to this role, you’ll be able to summon demons to battle alongside you, which determine the weapons and skills available to you. Oninaki is being headed by creative producer Takashi Tokita, who previously worked on Chrono Trigger and Parasite Eve, both considered classics in their own way.
