With a new console generation almost here, many upcoming games are understandably shrouded in mystery. Some of these games already have trailers, while others have given us scarcely more than a title and a handful of details to go on.

If like us, you can’t wait to see what the next generation of games has to offer, then check out everything we know about the top six most mysterious upcoming titles.

1. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum

The Lord of the Rings Gollum

In 2021, everyone’s favourite cave-dwelling ring-wanter will get his first very own video game. Basically, all we know is that this game is coming from Daedalic Entertainment, the makers of Shadow Tactics and Deponia, and that it’s based on Tolkien’s classic books, rather than the Lord of the Rings film series. While you await your next trip to middle-earth, why not read up on all the other games confirmed for next-gen?

2. Deathloop

Deathloop is a truly fascinating concept – two assassins are locked in an eternal battle to the death in a never-ending time loop. Basically, imagine Mr and Mrs Smith crossed with Groundhog Day. The E3 trailer – which we wrote about here – gave us an idea of the thrilling action we’ll see in the full game, which is being developed by the same studio responsible for the critically acclaimed Dishonored series.

3. Ghostwire: Tokyo

Announced at the same Bethesda press conference as Deathloop, Ghostwire: Tokyo is another enigmatic project, with a trailer that gives very little away. From what we can gather, Ghostwire Tokyo has you hunting down a paranormal evil, as citizens begin disappearing from the streets. Considering this game is coming from the mind of Shinji Mikami, the director of the first Resident Evil and The Evil Within series, you can bet there will be some scares in store for you in Ghostwire: Tokyo.

4. Elden Ring

Cross the creators of Dark Souls with Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin and what do you get? A load of arms, apparently. Given the prestige of its creators, Elden Ring remains one of the most sought-after games in development. Fans are so desperate for news on the project that they’ve even taken to Reddit to invent their own lore for the game. Now we’ll get back to rewatching that E3 trailer.

5. Dragon Age 4

Bioware have had their hands full with sci-fi spectaculars in recent years, but many fans are calling for a return to their swords and sorcery series, Dragon Age. It seems like Bioware are listening, as several hints have emerged from the company suggesting that a return to the popular fantasy series could be imminent. For more information on Dragon Age 4, here’s everything you need to know about the long-awaited sequel.

6. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel

Breath of the Wild is one of the most popular Zelda games to date, and one of the finest open-world games of all time, so naturally a follow-up is on the way. We don’t know when we’ll see this highly anticipated sequel, but we do know that it looks considerably darker than its predecessor. We reckon this game could even be the Majora’s Mask of the current gaming generation.
