However, fans of film and prestige television are rightfully excited about the star portraying the game’s villain. The star is John Bernthal, and he’s best known for playing the titular role in Netflix series, The Punisher.

Bernthal is the latest in a long tradition of Hollywood A-listers who have lent their talents to video game projects, and if the trailers are anything to go by, he looks set to deliver another powerhouse performance as Cole D. Walker. As we await Breakpoint’s launch on Friday, we’re taking a look back at some of the best celebrity performances in video games.

1. Kit Harington in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

You will probably know him as Game of Thrones’ King in the North, but Kit Harington also hammed it up as the villainous Admiral Salen Kotch in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

2. Liam Neeson in Fallout 3

Following in the footsteps of Patrick Stewart, who played Uriel Septim VII in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, veteran actor Liam Neeson was brought on-board to introduce the first moments of Bethesda’s sprawling roleplaying game, Fallout 3.

3. Kiefer Sutherland in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

To mark Big Boss’s transition into his darker years, series director Hideo Kojima enlisted the talents of 24 star Kiefer Sutherland. Sutherland, who is no stranger to playing no-nonsense action heroes, provided the voice and motion capture for Venom Snake.

4. Mark Hamill in Batman Arkham series

Mark Hamill is best known for playing Luke Skywalker, but what you may not know is that he has also enjoyed a distinguished career in voice acting. His most notable gaming role has to be his delightfully unhinged portrayal of Batman’s arch-nemesis The Joker in the Arkham Trilogy.

5. Leonard Nimoy in Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep

Appearing alongside Hamill, the legendary Star Trek actor Leonard Nimoy provided his wonderfully grizzled voice for Kingdom Hearts’ big-bad Xehanort in the prequel Birth By Sleep. Nimoy sadly passed away before Kingdom Hearts III was developed, so in this game, the role was filled by the late Blade-Runner star, Rutger Hauer.

Bonus – Keanu Reeves in Cyberpunk 2077

Ok, so we can’t in good conscience include Cyberpunk 2077 in our top five, as the game isn’t out yet, but Keanu deserves an honourable mention here, because he’s just so darn breathtaking.
