5 things we learned from the Mortal Kombat 11 beta

Mortal Kombat 11 beta

The Mortal Kombat 11 beta took place weekend, giving us an early insight in what to expect from the return of the veteran series. With the ferocious fighter less than a month away from hitting shelves, we thought we’d delve into some of the things we learned from the beta to whet your appetite before the bloody banquet launches on 23 April.

1. Customisable gear is both style and substance

One of the biggest changes in Mortal Kombat 11 is the new Gear system, which lets you customise your fighters to huge degrees. For instance, if you’re playing as Scorpion, you’re able to choose his mask, what type of blades he carries, and what kunai he wields.

While these are purely cosmetic on their own, you can attach Augments to them that will provide stat boosts to characters, letting you not only customise how a character looks, but how they feel as well. We can’t wait to experiment more thoroughly with them in the game.

2. Towers provide satisfying blast of action

Towers, the Mortal Kombat mode where you have to take on a variety of opponents, returns and it’s a perfect introduction to help get you used to the rhythm of combat. While we can’t wait to delve into the story mode’s ludicrously fun yarn, Towers provides a chance to test your combat skills against the AI in a more concentrated manner, letting you get used to how fighters fare against random characters. It’s a handy mode to play before you venture online.

3. Photo mode will let you show off your designs

What’s the point of being able to stamp your style on Sub-Zero if you can’t show it off? Well, one of the small things that caught our eye in the beta was the photo mode on the customise character screen. Considering the sheer volume of options you’ll have when it comes to customising characters, we’re already rubbing our hands with glee at the idea of a Mortal Kombat fashion we can grab snaps of.

4. Online stat-tracking will help you be a focused fighter

When we do decide to head online, we get the chance to try a “low-stakes” kasual match, which smoothly matches us up with an opponent. What’s really interesting though is the stat-tracking that’s in Injustice 2 is also in Mortal Kombat 11, showing how many games you’ve won and your odds of a win in your next fight. It’s a neat touch that gives an extra little spice to these fights, as you know you’ll see every success and failure next time you fight.

Shame we lost most of our scraps.

5. It’s still incredibly gory

Of course Mortal Kombat 11 was going to have buckets of the red stuff. Gallons of body ketchup is a prerequisite for the series and we’re glad to report that this entry both looks better than ever and reveals in it with some bone-crunchingly brutal fatalities. Whether it’s watching Skarlet use a scythe made of blood or Scorpion burying his kunai into an opponent’s eye-socket, Mortal Kombat 11 is as gory as it’s ever been. More importantly, this beta proves it’s as fun as it’s ever been as well.
