1. Half-Life was the best-selling first-person shooter for over a decade

Half-Life

We all know that Valve’s debut game was a runaway success, but did you know that it held the title as the best-selling first-person shooter for over 13 years? The game was finally surpassed in 2011 with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which I’m sure we can all agree is a worthy successor.

2. In Germany, Half-Life had robots

The original Half-Life was censored for the German market to avoid getting an 18 rating. Incredibly, this meant that all human soldiers were replaced with robots and the colour of blood splatters was changed to yellow in order to tone down the game’s violence. While these changes don’t quite fit the lore, we sort of want to see what Half-Life: Alyx would look like overrun by robots!

3. Quentin Tarantino is a fan

Apparently, the late Robin Williams wasn’t the only celebrity with a reverence for Ravenholm. According to IMDB, the legendary movie director Quentin Tarantino is a fan of the Half-Life series, even saying he would like to adapt the game into a film.

4. Gordon Freeman has no body

Half-Life 2

Half-Life 2 doesn’t actually contain a model or texture for the main character, Gordon Freeman, leading us to assume that the other characters see him as nothing more than a pair of disembodied arms. This is a fact that remains undiscovered by many players, as the game has no reflective surfaces that show real-time reflections.

5. Half-Life has a brilliant unofficial remake

Black Mesa

While Valve have never remade the original Half-Life, some creative fans have taken it upon themselves to develop an incredible full reimagining of the classic title. Developed and published by Crowbar Collective, Black Mesa is a loving tribute to Valve’s groundbreaking original, featuring all 19 chapters remade in stunning modern graphics.
