How Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 evolves the action series

MUA 3: The Black Order

Avengers (and Guardians, X-Men, and pretty much the entire Marvel universe) assemble on the 19 July when Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order launches on Nintendo Switch. The action role playing game will see you going up against Thanos and The Black Order, in an original story written by ex-Marvel editor Marc Sumerian, and it looks set to provide the flashy comic thrills we’ve not seen from the series since MUA 2’s launch way back in 2009.

With a decade gap between the two entries, we’re looking at how Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is moving the series forward.

1. Cinematic influence

Let’s start with the story. While the first two Marvel Ultimate Alliance games focused on the comic side of things, with the second MUA game adapting the iconic Civil War storyline, this one focuses more on the MCU. Characters and designs take their inspiration from their big-screen counterparts, with the Guardians making their Ultimate Alliance debut.

Because Ultimate Alliance lets you choose a squad of 4 heroes to from your roster, you’ll be able to create the sort of team ups that you could only dream about… Okay, until Endgame gave us all the team ups, but still.

2. Taking on Thanos

Speaking of cinematic influence, the story from Marc Sumerak, will also feature Thanos and The Black Order. Hey, they’re in the title of the game for a reason after all. While we might have just seen the MCU’s version of this story wrap-up, it’ll mark the first time Thanos has appeared in a Marvel Ultimate Alliance game, meaning the stakes have never been higher for this universe.

3. New developers

It’s not just a new storyline to be excited for with MUA 3, it’s also got veteran action developers Team Ninja working on it. They’re known for working on the legendary (hard) Ninja Gaiden series, as well as Nioh, Hyrule Warriors, and plenty of other games. When it comes to having a scrap in a video game, they know how to deliver, and we can’t wait to see what they do when they have a talking Raccoon and a sentient tree to play with.

The combat will still be familiar to fans of the series though, with light attacks, special abilities, and the ultimate attacks that look like a comic pane come to life. You’ll also be able to upgrade characters in your roster collectively and individually, giving you a deep role playing experience alongside the frantic combat we know Team Ninja can deliver.

4. New Camera

While the series is known for being played in a top-down perspective, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 will also introduce a new ‘Hero Camera’. This puts the camera closer to the action, like in a more traditional action game, giving you a new perspective on all the moves your heroes are pulling off. The isometric camera remains, but this looks like a fun way of adding more style to the game’s combat.

5. Nintendo Switch

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 marks the first time an Ultimate Alliance game is debuting exclusively on one console, which means that we’ll be able to take our cosmic adventure wherever we go. We can’t wait to start out a mission on the commute into work, team up with friends at launch, and then play on the big screen when we get home. Earth’s mightiest heroes going mobile is the perfect thing to fill in the break between now and the next Avengers film.
