After being swallowed up by a black hole, Fortnite’s battle island has returned, with a radical new look and plenty of new game mechanics.

In classic Fortnite fashion, players have been left to discover many of the new features on their own, and it didn’t take long for players to stumble across a potentially revolutionary new mechanic in the form of the weapon upgrade system.

When exploring the new island, look out for workbenches hidden inside unassuming buildings. At workbenches, you can spend materials you have gathered, such as wood, bricks, and metal, to upgrade your weapon to the next tier of rarity.

For example, a common assault rifle (grey) can be upgraded to an uncommon (green) by spending 50 wood, 50 brick, and 50 metal. The weapon will then get all the stat boosts that come with this higher tier.

Naturally, the higher the tier you want to upgrade to, the more materials you’re going to need to stump up. Taking the assault rifle from uncommon to rare for example, will run you 150 of each of the materials listed above.

As the first season of Chapter 2 rolls on, we expect players to uncover all manner of secrets and Easter Eggs in the new island map. Given Epic’s track record of constant updates and limited time events, don’t expect it to stay the same for long.
