A new console generation is on the horizon and that means a whole lot of new games are about to start dominating your play queue. While this is a tremendously exciting concept, the upshot of this is that some utterly brilliant games may be left languishing in your backlog for years to come.

There’s never been a better time to clear your backlog, so here are some useful, practical tips for how to get through all those games you just haven’t found the time to play.

Tip #1 – Play on Easy

We know some of you hardcore gamers might recoil at that statement, but we’re strong believers that difficulty doesn’t matter, as long as you’re having fun. Many games offer modes for those who want to get through the game quickly, for example, the recent ports of classic Final Fantasy games feature combat boosters and even the option to speed up the game to three times its normal speed!

Tip #2 – Ignore the side-quests

Look, we love helping retrieve a lost cat from a tree as much as the next person, but that’s not going to help you cut down that towering pile of unfinished games. Stick to the story and try to avoid the judgemental eyes of the local farmer NPC who needs help with his hay bales.

Tip # 3 – Diversify

While it might seem a great idea to play every single Assassin’s Creed game in order, playing too much of one type of game can lead to burnout. We suggest mixing up your gaming habits as much as possible. Just smashed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare? Try sprinkling in one of those indie games you’ve been putting off forever. Trust us, you won’t regret it.

Tip #4 – Don’t bite off more than you can chew

Starting 12 different games in one evening is a recipe for backlog-clearing failure. Try to limit how many games you have on the go at any one time, to ensure quality games don’t fade into the background.

Tip #5 – Don’t persist with a game you don’t like

Not every game will click with you straight away – and that’s okay. If you find that none of the games in your backlog scratch your itch, you can always pick up some brilliant new titles from GAME. If your backlog is clear and you’re ready for the next generation, why not read up on everything we know about the PS5 and the Xbox Series X?
