Layers of Fear

Having to confront the past through a series of increasingly macabre hallucinations makes Layers of Fear one of the more unsettling horror games in recent memory. Instead of buckets of gore and disfigured monsters, you’re confronted with an obsessive painter’s fevered attempts to paint the perfect portrait. As the house you explore shifts in front of your eyes, the story’s twists and turns will keep making your skin crawl long after you reach the end.

Clock Tower: The First Fear

Trapped in a dark and foreboding mansion, you’re an orphan being stalked by the mutilated and scissor-wielding baddie known as the Scissorman. Your attempts to solve puzzles are constantly hampered by the Scissorman’s sudden appearances, which trigger you to panic and make you more likely to trip or slow down even as you’re trying desperately to escape. Keep a close eye out for hiding places, and if you’re feeling really brave, try to save your fellow orphan friends too.

Slender: The Eight Pages

It’s dark and you’re alone in the woods, and no matter how far or how fast you run, Slender Man is coming for you. Avoid him as best you can as you hurry through the forest to collect scattered pages, which you can only hope will be enough to save yourself from his deadly clutches. Your only tool is a flashlight with a dying battery, and if you rely on it too much, it’ll run out and plunge you into darkness…

Outlast

Have you known true terror until you’ve explored an abandoned asylum with nothing but a night vision camera? Now add on some mutated patients known as ‘Variants’ who will chase you through the halls of Mount Massive Asylum with unrelenting zeal and you’ve got a recipe for some potent nightmare juice.

Five Nights at Freddy’s

There’s something undeniably creepy about animatronics at the best of times, but being locked in an empty pizzeria overnight with a roomful of twitchy anthropomorphic animal robots is a hundred times worse. Armed only with CCTV cameras, two doors to slam shut and an ever-dwindling supply of power to see you through the night, you’ll have to outwit increasingly determined animatronics who will stop at nothing to burst into your office. Worst bit is, you don’t even get any pizza.

Little Nightmares

Think Tim Burton crossed with Spirited Away, and you’ll have an idea of what to expect from Little Nightmares. You’re a tiny child trapped in a vast monster-infested ship called The Maw, and you’ll need all your wits about you as you escape an environment designed for creatures an awful lot bigger than you are. There’s no fighting back – all you can do is keep to the shadows, hide from the watchful eyes in the walls, and try your best not to get grabbed by hideous monsters with the longest arms you’ve ever seen.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

One of our favourite modern horror games, Amnesia: The Dark Descent places you in the dark and spooky halls of Brennenburg Castle. The downside is, you’re definitely not on your own. With few memories beyond your own name and the knowledge that you’re being hunted by something scary, you race to recover your scattered diaries in the hope of finding out who you are and why you’re here. The shadows will conceal you from the monsters, but don’t linger in the dark too long…
