The enchanted world of Harry Potter is coming to mobile in 2019 in a brand new augmented reality game from Niantic, the makers of Pokémon Go. You can pre-register on the Wizards Unite website, but before you go, here’s everything we know so far about this magical new game…
You’ve got a job to do
Playing as a brand new recruit of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force, budding witches and wizards will be able to take to the streets and search for traces of magic and “Foundables” scattered around the world – in other words, everything from escaped magical creatures and rogue broomsticks through to lost memories and powerful artefacts. In order to keep the magical world safe from prying Muggle eyes, these Foundables must be located and spirited back to the Ministry of Magic for safekeeping.
And while in Pokémon Go you choose one of three teams to affiliate with, Wizards Unite has three Profession classes instead. So whether you want to become an ace Auror, knowledgeable Professor, or capable Magizoologist, you’ll be able to tailor your abilities accordingly.
There are so many things to collect
You can find and capture Foundables by casting spells (for the record, it’s levi-OH-sa, not levi-oh-SAAA), and you’ll need to replenish your spell energy periodically by visiting Inns, where you’ll be able to stock up on food and drinks. If you come across a special Greenhouse, you’ll find different ingredients for making Potions, or you can venture out into the world to look for those ingredients that only appear at certain times of day, or in certain weather conditions.
Another thing to look out for is something called a Portmanteau, which you can unlock to get your hands on a Portkey. Fans of the Harry Potter series will know that Portkeys function like teleportation devices, and in Wizards Unite they’ll open up a portal to a 360 degree augmented reality location from the beloved series, such as Ollivander’s Wand Shop.
There are challenges to complete too
For the bravest witches and wizards among you, there’ll also be Fortresses to visit, much like Pokémon Go’s Gyms. Complete tricky multiplayer challenges there, such as taking on a Dementor or engaging a Dark Witch or Wizard in battle, and you’ll be rewarded with rarer Foundables.
And there’ll even be chances to encounter our favourite Harry Potter characters too, from the lightning-scarred hero himself to his arachnophobic best friend Ron Weasley. Which characters are you hoping to meet while exploring the wizarding world?
Pokémon Go players can keep their usernames
If you play Pokémon Go or Ingress Prime, you can carry your username across to Wizards Unite, as long as someone else hasn’t claimed it already. All you’ll need to do is head over to the Niantic website and register your username before April 30.
