Hardest Gaming Choices - TWD

In narrative-driven games, we often find ourselves presented with near-impossible choices, forcing us to consider dilemmas we would never have to ponder in the real world. No, we’re not talking about whether to pick up another wheel of cheese in Oblivion (although that is a tough question in itself).

In narrative-driven games, we often find ourselves presented with near-impossible choices, forcing us to consider dilemmas we would never have to ponder in the real world. No, we’re not talking about whether to pick up another wheel of cheese in Oblivion (although that is a tough question in itself).

We’re talking about the life-or-death choices that had us putting down our controllers and drawing out pros and cons lists as we hopelessly grasped at the possible outcomes. Here are some of the most cruel choices games have forced us to make.

Spoilers follow for Telltale’s The Walking Dead, Life is Strange, Detroit: Become Human, Mass Effect 3, and Gears 5.

1. Shoot Lee or walk away – Telltale’s The Walking Dead

The first season of Telltale’s The Walking Dead was a breakout success, and at its core was the relationship between young Clementine and her surrogate father Lee. After Lee’s bitten by a walker, your final decision is whether to ask Clem to walk away or put you down.

2. Save Chloe or Arcadia Bay – Life is Strange

The choices in this supernatural teen drama are made a little easier by the fact that you can rewind time, undoing any mistakes you might have made along the way. However, the final choice takes away this option, forcing you to choose whether to save your closest companion or an entire town of people. Can we have our rewind button back?!

3. Defend or endure – Detroit: Become Human

Detroit: Become Human is a multi-stranded story in which almost everything you do will impact the overall outcome. When playing as android servant Markus, you will have to choose whether to endure abuse from your master, or fight back. Spoiler alert – you’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

4. Fergus or Wyatt – Wolfenstein: New Order

This horrific choice sets the tone for this Wolfenstein reboot – and it certainly doesn’t pull its punches. The first time you come face to face with chief villain General Deathshead, he will force you to choose which of your allies to save – fresh-faced American, Wyatt or the hardened Scotsman, Fergus.

5. JD or Del – Gears 5

While Gears of War has surprisingly rich lore, the series is not known for giving you a choice in how the story plays out. Gears 5 breaks this convention by forcing you to choose which one of your allies is killed by the hands of the Locust Queen. Del has been a loyal companion, but letting JD die will break the heart of everyone’s favourite gear, Marcus. Choose wisely.
