Bloodborne True Endings
Bloodborne True Endings

One thing that makes video game storytelling unique is the possibility for the player to shape their own story through choices and actions. Sometimes, the way a game concludes is decided purely by player choice, other times it’s dictated by your play style or performance.

However, there are certain occasions where games really make you work for a certain ending by employing all manner of obscure parameters and optional objectives. Here are some game endings that were so difficult to achieve, we almost had to give up and watch them on YouTube. Almost.

Bloodborne – ‘True’ Ending

Bloodborne - Gehrman

This action-horror game has three possible endings. The first is a doddle – simply give yourself up to your mentor-turned-adversary, Gehrman at the end of the game. To get the second ending, you’ll need to defeat Gehrman in battle, which is no easy feat. Achieving the ‘True’ ending is a whole other kettle of Lovecraftian fish-people. To get this ending you will have to collect three rare items and consume them before facing Gehrman. You will then have to battle and defeat the game’s true final boss – Moon Presence.

Final Fantasy X-2 – ‘Perfect’ Ending

Final Fantasy X-2

Final Fantasy X denied players a happy ending, instead opting for a bittersweet conclusion, in which our hero Tidus disappears into the ether, presumably never to return. Naturally, many fans wanted to see the spunky Blitzball player reunited with his true love Yuna in the sequel, but in order to bring him back and get the ‘Perfect’ ending, players had to achieve 100% completion before the credits rolled. This is a hefty task, as every location in Spira has a unique scenario in each of the five chapters. Miss even one of these optional objectives and you will be locked out from the ‘Perfect’ ending.

Kingdom Hearts III – Secret Ending

Kingdom Hearts III

After-credits scenes are a long-standing tradition in the Kingdom Hearts series, and the epic conclusion to the Xehanort Saga is no exception. The requirements for unlocking Kingdom Hearts III’s bonus movie varies depending on the difficulty setting you are playing on. If you’re playing on Proud mode (Hard), you will need to collect a paltry 30 Lucky Emblems, whereas Normal players will need to gather 60 of them. Easy players will probably need a guide handy, as they will be required to find a whopping 90 Lucky Emblems.

Silent Hill – UFO Ending

Silent Hill

While Silent Hill is a notoriously sinister psychological horror series, it has also become known for its goofy sense of humour – which is demonstrated in its hilarious gag endings. In order to achieve this frankly bizarre ending in which protagonist Harry Mason is abducted by aliens, you will need to begin a Next Fear run of the game and use an item called the Channelling Stone in five hidden locations.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – Nuclear Disarmament

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

This optional scene in Metal Gear Solid V is not only difficult to achieve, it’s actually near impossible. A key feature of The Phantom Pain is developing weapons with which to defend your base, the ultimate form of which being a nuclear warhead. Players can earn an achievement for developing this item and it’s also possible to steal and dismantle other players’ nukes, but this secret ending can only be triggered when no one on your regional server possesses a nuke. Although some sneaky hackers have extracted the ending and posted it online, the scene has yet to be triggered through legitimate means.
