The first part of the Pokémon Sword and Shield expansion pass, called The Isle of Armor, is on its way this June, so with new adventures (and outfits) just around the corner, now’s a great time to start stocking up on Pokédollars. Fortunately, there’s a simple trick to help you earn some serious in-game megabucks in no time at all, and all it requires is a certain item and a large cat. Best of all, said large cat – also known as Gigantamax Meowth – is currently available for everyone to find in-game.

Before we get started, don’t forget to check out what’s included in The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra, and if you’re yet to pre-order your copy of the expansion pass, you can get it at GAME right now.

Step 1: Obtain a Gigantamax Meowth

For the uninitiated, Gigantamax Pokémon are unique to the Galar region. Among all those outrageously British teapot-shaped and top-hat-clad Pokémon are Gigantamax Pokémon, which are able to transform into enormous and extremely powerful versions of themselves. And honestly, given the backstories of some of the Pokémon we’ve seen over the years, this seems pretty ordinary to us.

Gigantamax Meowth was originally available as an early purchase bonus, so you might have one already. But if not, don’t panic: you can get one to appear in the Wild Area up until 2 June.

Open up your menu and go to Mystery Gift. From there, select “Get Wild Area News”. This updates your Wild Area so you can be sure Gigantamax Meowth will appear (as long as it’s before 2 June, of course). You might have to do a little bit of hunting as they don’t appear in every single den, but you’ll be pleased to hear that not all of them are 5 star Pokémon, meaning you should be able to catch one without a major battle on your hands.

Step 2: Obtain an Amulet Coin

You may well have one of these items already, but if not, simply clear the first three Gyms in the game, then head to Galar Mine No. 2 in the Motostoke Outskirts. There’s a sign right outside the mine, which is where you’ll find a shiny Amulet Coin. Equip it to your Gigantamax Meowth.

Step 3: Enter a Challenge

Now all that remains is to start battling. You’ll need to Gigantamax your Meowth in the battle and use the move G-Max Gold Rush the maximum number of three times in order to increase the amount you can earn with each move.

To earn a lot of Pokédollars quickly, we’d recommend taking on the Champion Cup matches because they reward you with a lot of prize money, but this technique works in other battles too. As long as you use a Pokémon holding the Amulet coin in battle at least once, your prize money will be doubled. One thing to note though: you can’t use the Amulet Coin against wild Pokémon. They don’t routinely offer prize money for being beaten up and captured.

So there you have it – a quick and easy way to stock up on Pokédollars before the expansion pass arrives. It also means you can finally justify buying that awesome Motorcycle Jacket for a mere 111,300 Pokédollars. Totally worth it.
