What was P.T. really about? – Silent Hills

Over the years, the idiosyncratic creator of the Metal Gear Solid series, Hideo Kojima, has become known for messing with his audience, but none of his carefully planned stunts have inspired such widespread debate as his brief foray into the horror genre. In 2014 Kojima Productions released a ‘Playable Teaser’ for a new take on a beloved horror franchise – Silent Hill. Although P.T. was met with a mixture of fascination and excitement, fans were dismayed when, after almost a year of silence, the project was cancelled. What’s in the box?! – Trials Evolution

Gaming's Greatest Unsolved Mysteries - Trials Evolution

One of the most mysterious alternate reality games to ever take place originated in, of all things, the physics-based motorcycle game Trials Evolution. The investigation began with a series of wooden planks found in one of the game’s levels that could be arranged to form a secret message. The message provided instructions on how to perform a secret manoeuvre in the game, which in turn opened up a series of increasingly obscure steps which eventually lead fans to four chests hidden in real-life locations. Each of the chests contained metal keys and a message that read: “Midday in Year 2113. 1st Sat in Aug/One of Five keys will open the box/Underneath the Eiffel Tower.” We’re still 94 years away from the stated end date of this ARG, so don’t expect answers anytime soon.

Gaming's Greatest Unsolved Mysteries - G-Man Half-Life 2

The G-Man is an enigmatic character in the Half-Life series, appearing throughout, often in inaccessible or hard to reach areas of the game world. The G-Man’s motivations remain unclear throughout the series, sometimes guiding the protagonist Gordon Freeman, other times appearing with sinister intent. There are numerous fan theories about the G-Man’s real purpose, but nothing can be said for sure, other than that he is in some way connected to alien invaders that are threatening Earth. Thankfully, with Half-Life: Alyx on the horizon, we might finally learn more about this perplexing individual.

Who are the shadow people? – Super Mario Galaxy 2

Gaming's Greatest Mysteries - Super Mario Galaxy 2

If you’ve played Super Mario Galaxy 2’s Shiverburn Galaxy level you might remember some seriously ominous figures staring down at you from the top of a nearby mountain. These figures appear to follow you throughout the level, never averting their creepy gaze. Fans who have dug into the game’s code have found that the figures are named ‘Hell Valley Sky Trees’, which doesn’t seem to add up. ‘Hell Valley’ was most likely an early codename for the level that was deemed too scary and was changed, but the silhouettes themselves remain shrouded in mystery. Who knows just who or what the ‘Hell Valley Sky Trees’ really are…
