As much as we love ongoing sagas, sometimes a beloved game franchise just needs a fresh start. Here are some of the times a reboot made us fall in love with a game series all over again.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare - a group of soldiers in the woods

The return of Captain Price is not only a superb shooter in its own right but also expertly reintroduces us to the world of Modern Warfare. Along with an all-new story that borrows elements from Infinity Ward’s original trilogy, Modern Warfare also updates the gameplay with a chunkier, more realistic feel.

Tomb Raider (2013)

2013’s Tomb Raider is a masterclass in how to reinvent a franchise. The game dropped the less realistic aspects of the Tomb Raider story and adopted a grittier tone, making for a more authentic action-adventure experience.

Ninja Theory’s take on Devil May Cry distilled the hack and slash series to its core strengths, creating a uniquely fluid combat system that rewarded players for switching weapons and combat styles during combos.

Wolfenstein: The New Order (2014)

Launching two years ahead of id’s Doom reimagining, Wolfenstein: The New Order revitalised this classic shooter franchise for the new console generation. The New Order was a grittier take on the Wolfenstein mythology, but retained the series’ sense of humour and injected some heart into the story with an effortlessly likeable cast of characters.

God of War (2018)

After a few years away, everyone’s favourite angry spartan returned in 2018, looking slightly less angry. This soft-reboot weaved in elements of more recent games like Dark Souls and The Last of Us, creating a game that felt like a true progression for the series.
