There’s a good reason that mad scientists are one of the most popular villain archetypes of all time. From Victor Frankenstein to Lex Luther, the genius gone awry has remained one of the scariest concepts in fiction, especially to those of us who flunked GSCE science.

1. Dr. Robotnik – Sonic the Hedgehog

Gaming's greatest mad scientists Eggman

Gaming’s original round boy may appear to be cuddly at first, but make no mistake, he’s stone-cold evil. He’s now more commonly referred to as Eggman, owing to his rotund shape rather than his affinity for classic Beatles tracks.

2. Dr. Neo Cortex – Crash Bandicoot

The fact that Dr. Neo Cortex has the first letter of his name stamped on his forehead should tell you everything you need to know about this narcissistic madman. However, for all his faults, Cortex is responsible for creating one of the most beloved characters in gaming, having engineered the titular marsupial, Crash, in his laboratory.

3. Dr. Wily – Mega Man

Sharing more than a few visual similarities with Dr. Cortex, Mega Man’s chief villain is just as devious as his name suggests. Much like Eggman, Dr. Wily aims to achieve world domination, through his fleet of combat robots.

4. Hojo – Final Fantasy VII

Gamings greatest mad scientists Hojo

Although he’s not the game’s chief villain, Hojo is arguably the most twisted character in the game. Hojo is the man responsible for infusing his son Sephiroth with Jenova cells, turning him into the super-powered monster who almost destroys the world. Father of the Year, he ain’t.

5. Dr. Nefarious – Ratchet & Clank

While Dr. Nefarious’ stated goal is to eliminate all organic life to make way for a robot-only universe, his real motivation is to get revenge on his childhood bully, Captain Quark. With his relatable backstory and constant malfunctions that cause him to spout dialogue from his favourite soap operas, it’s hard to hate this mechanical malefactor.

Honourable mention – Dr. Junkenstein

Although Junkrat from Overwatch clearly has no scientific qualifications, we’ve got to give props to this impressively-convincing Halloween skin.
