Gaming’s Greatest Blades

Everyone loves a good video game sword, sabre, or scimitar, but it can be hard to make them stand out in what is, let’s face it, a crowded market. The video game blade is more than just a tool to defeat enemies, it’s a symbol. Look at Link’s Master Sword and you see his destiny, his role as the chosen hero of Hyrule. Look at Prince of Persia’s Dagger of Time, and you see the game series’ central mechanic on show.

Blades aren’t just the tool of character, but they are also an extension of the player, of both your will to act, and the path you cut through a game. Without further ado, these are gaming’s greatest blades.

Energy Sword

Swing it in: Halo 2

It’s hard to recall the first time we saw an Elite with an Energy Sword, but I think most of us had the same terrified reaction, followed shortly by a desperate yearning to get our hands on one. In Halo 2 we got that wish when they were introduced as usable weapons in the Arbiter’s campaign, and multiplayer was changed forever.

Halo’s Energy Sword is so recognisable it has become a symbol for the series. Though the Brute Hammers followed shortly after, and were perhaps even more fun, they will never have the same iconic quality.

Lightsaber

Swing it in: Star Wars games

Not just one of the most iconic videogame blades, but one of the most iconic blades ever, the Lightsaber has appeared throughout the history of Star Wars games. Whether in Knights of the Old Republic, or the recent Jedi: Fallen Order, Lightsabers are not only a symbol of the force, but are part of the power fantasy which surrounds playing as a Jedi.

The idea of having a superpower which allows you to manipulate the world is great, but also having the martial prowess to cut down your foes with a laser sword is honestly the cherry on the cake.

The Dagger of Time

Swing it in: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Though a humble blade, the Prince of Persia’s dagger contains the Sands of Time, a magical substance which allows him to manipulate the course of events. This is a mechanic which has become as important to the series as acrobatic daring and (more recently) floppy boyband haircuts. In terms of the story, the dagger also represents the Prince’s regrets, what he’s lost, and almost ironically, his inability to change his past mistakes.

Buster Sword

Swing it in: Final Fantasy VII Remake

Cloud’s blade, the massive Buster Sword, is arguably the most iconic weapon in the Final Fantasy setting. Something about its absurd size, yet how easily Cloud wields it in combat, is a perfect summation of the eccentricity of Final Fantasy VII, and the vibrant futuristic world that it belongs to. Also, cool fact: Buster is around six feet long, and is actually classified as a massive broadsword.

Master Sword

Swing it in: The Legend of Zelda series

The Legend of Zelda games have always been about cycles, and the Triforce is the symbol of that – three characters, Link, Zelda, and Ganon, colliding throughout history. But another one of these returning elements is the Master Sword, used to time travel in Ocarina of Time, and the tool which Link has used to defeat Ganon throughout the years.

The Master Sword is a symbol for Link’s destiny, and his hero’s journey, as he leaves his hometown, and sets out into a world of adventure.

Keyblade

Swing it in: Kingdom Hearts

Is it a key? Is it a blade? It’s kind of both. As Sora, the main character of Kingdom Hearts, you wield this weapon. But the blade itself is somewhat of a mystery, though it does play a *key* role in the series’ epic (and confusing) story of the battle between the forces of light and dark which has defined the games to date.

Blades of Chaos

Swing them in: God of War

Forged in the depths of Hades by Ares, God of War, the Blades of Chaos are the first pair of weapons that Kratos uses in the God of War games. These dangerous swords are part of what makes up Kratos signature combat style, destroying enemies at range with brutal flurries of attacks.
