7 Games That Take Place Entirely Indoors

Everyone is making lists of big games at the moment, of massive outdoor spaces with rolling green hills and snow-capped mountains – worlds that you can lose yourself in. But there’s something uniquely special about indoor games as well. For a developer to say no to creating an open world, and instead putting all of their effort into fleshing out a little space, takes a lot of guts.

But it also makes for a far more detailed game. It’s incredible what can be created, whether it’s a looping corridor, a puzzle room, or a simple security booth. If we’re stuck indoors for a while, maybe rather than looking out on huge, open worlds, we should be looking in, and pondering what it really means to be inside. These are seven games that take place entirely indoors.

These are seven games that take place entirely indoors:

P.T.

PT-Silence-Hill

Though it’s almost impossible to get hold of P.T. now, this horror game based in a single corridor rose to massive critical acclaim. P.T. stands for Playable Teaser, as the short game, directed by Hideo Kojima and Guilermo Del Toro, was intended as a teaser for the next Silent Hill. You wander through a looping corridor, as details change around you, all the while being stalked by the ghost of a girl, Lisa. We never got the next Silent Hill, but we’ll always have P.T.

Portal 2

Taking place entirely in the facility of Aperture Science, in the same universe as the Half Life series, you play a test subject using a portal gun to overcome a series of puzzles. As the game goes on however, you realise all is not quite right at Aperture Science, or with the AI who is insisting you complete these seemingly pointless tests. Portal is a fantastic mixture of dark comedy and logic puzzles, which still plays well today.

Fight Nights at Freddy’s

Being the night-time security guard at Freddy Fasbear’s Pizza restaurant is a job you’d think would be fairly chill. But at night, the animatronic animals who entertain the children at Freddys come to life and try to murder you. For five nights you must watch them through cameras in your security booth, locking the doors if they get too close, but the catch is limited power, and if you run out, everything shuts down. Five Nights at Freddy’s remains one of the most terrifying games out there. Also here’s a hint: watch out for the fox.

Gone Home

Set entirely in your character’s family house, Gone Home sees you arrive back to discover your family is missing. You must wander each room piecing together clues to try and work out what happened to them, exploring details you find along the way. Gone Home is a great game, and one of the walking simulators which brought the genre into mainstream popularity.

The Room

the-room-escape-room

This series of puzzle games essentially boils the idea of the escape room down into game form. In each you are given a mystery and you must move through a variety of rooms, trying to solve intricate puzzle boxes and complex riddles to discern the truth. Just like with real escape rooms, the detail of every puzzle, and how they all tie together is often brilliantly surprising.

Papers, Please

Lucas Pope’s bureaucracy simulator puts you in the shoes of a border guard in a Soviet style regime. Using only small amounts of information you must decide who is safe to enter the country, and who is likely to cause trouble. It’s a game which reflects on the idea of immigration, all while you check documents from your work booth.

Surgeon Simulator

In a similar style to Octodad, in this game you must perform delicate operations using a control scheme that is incredibly clumsy. It’s quite common in Surgeon Simulator for you to leave a few of the implements inside the patient when you sew them up. It’s a ridiculously fun and silly game, and it takes place entirely in an operating theatre.
