You died! Try again?

Most of the time, games prefer you to keep the hero alive. There’s often a lot of care put into undoing the horrific injuries you’ve probably inflicted on yourself as you battle baddies, dodge deadly traps, and occasionally fall sixty feet into a pit full of spikes. Or if all else fails, there’s always the tried-and-tested checkpoint system. After all, you’re not going to do much good if you’re stuck in a full-body plaster cast.

You died!

But very occasionally, you get to play as someone that’s already dead. Whether that’s as a ghost, a zombie, a vampire, or something that’s not really any of those but still probably belongs six feet under, you’re suddenly free to do all the things that bad guys normally do. So cram your leaking brains back into your cranium, dust off your ghostly weapons, and march into a spooky adventure as a proud member of the undead. Even death can’t stand in your way.

1. Sir Daniel Fortesque

Play as him in: MediEvil

games where the hero is already dead medievil sir dan fortesque

Struck down by a stray arrow before the battle against evil sorcerer Zarok ever really began, Sir Dan never had a chance to make his mark as a great hero. His return from the grave in skeletal form a hundred years later gives him a new opportunity to earn that title – and now he can pull off one bony arm and slap baddies with it, too.

2. The Chosen Undead

Play as them in: Dark Souls

games where the hero is already dead dark souls the chosen undead

Not many people are so determined to do something that they’ll come back from the dead fifty-odd times in a row. Your undead nature means that even if you die, die, and die again while fighting your way towards answers (and here’s a minor spoiler: you will), you’ll never truly disappear. Now that’s motivation.

3. Ed the Zombie

Play as him in: Ben and Ed

4. Kain

games where the hero is already dead blood omen legacy of kain

Getting unexpectedly assassinated is bad enough, but getting resurrected as a vampire by a passing necromancer is probably the rudest awakening anyone has ever had in a game. While there’s apparently a cure, it’s going to take a while to get to it, sooo… might as well have some fun with these new vampire powers in the meantime.

5. The Infected

games where the hero is already dead dying light be the zombie

It’s a little unfair that so many zombies get shot at on sight by passing humans, especially if all they were doing was harmlessly shuffling around making groaning noises. So it’s only fair that once in a while, they should have a chance to defend themselves. Step forward Dying Light’s multiplayer mode: now you get to be a super-strong zombie with a grudge. See how you like it, humans.

6. The Keeper

games where the hero is already dead the evil within the keeper

After spending the whole game shooting at (or more often, running away from) the monsters, it’s quite refreshing to step into the gore-stained boots of The Keeper and start battering the heroes in turn. Seems only fair.

7. Stubbs the Zombie

games where the hero is already dead stubbs the zombie in rebel without a pulse

If you’re going to be a vengeance-obsessed zombie, you might as well do the job properly. Eating the brains of nearby humans gives you a health boost, and it also means you have an ever-growing army of obedient zombie minions to help you out. Revenge never tasted so good. Or so much like brains.
