We’ve been watching every new trailer for Final Fantasy VII Remake, picking over it with a fine tooth comb for any sign of new or familiar characters that are sure to charm us when the game launches in April. We’ve already got to see a few members of the illustrious cast, and there are some new faces in the mix too.

So, for you eager Final Fantasy fans, we’ve put together a list of all the characters we know are in the game, along with a few details to help you get to know them better.

Cloud Strife

In the original? Yes

Final Fantasy Vii character

Final Fantasy VII’s spiky-haired protagonist is one of the most recognisable characters in Final Fantasy history and all gaming to boot. Cloud is a former member of the Shinra Corporation’s elite fighting force SOLDIER and begins the game as a mercenary who joins up with ecoterrorist group AVALANCHE. Cloud is a fierce warrior, haunted by a mysterious past, parts of which will be explored in the remake. Since the original 1997 game, Cloud has appeared in numerous spin-offs and has even stepped into the Super Smash Bros arena on more than one occasion.

Barrett and Marlene Wallace

In the original? Yes

Final Fantasy Vii characters - Barrett and Marlene

Barrett is the leader of the aforementioned ecoterrorist cell, AVALANCHE. A fearsome but somewhat reckless leader, Barrett is concerned with nothing more than stopping the evil Shinra Corporation and protecting his adopted daughter, Marlene.

Tifa Lockhart

In the original? Yes

Tifa is an accomplished martial artist, member of AVALANCHE, and Cloud’s childhood friend. We first meet her as a bartender at Seventh Heaven, a pub that acts as a safehouse for Barrett’s rebel group. Tifa’s headstrong determination and skill with her fists makes her one of your most dependable party members.

Aerith Gainsborough

In the original? Yes

Final Fantasy VII characters - Aerith

Aerith is a flower girl who resides in slums beneath the city of Midgar. Despite living a simple life, Aerith is constantly hounded by members of Shinra for reasons unknown. As the story goes on, Aerith’s importance will become all too clear. Aerith is particularly skilled in healing magic, so keep her around to make sure your team stay in tip-top shape.

Sephiroth

In the original? Yes

Final Fantasy VII characters

That black trench coat and silver mane can only mean one thing: Sephiroth! This supremely powerful member of SOLDIER disappeared some years back, but haunts Cloud in taunting visions. Don’t expect Sephiroth to play a huge role in this portion of the story, but rest assured the full extent of his villainy will be revealed in time.

Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge

In the original? Yes

FF7 characters - Jessie

These spunky freedom fighters form the backbone of AVALANCHE, diligently fighting for the cause no matter the cost.

Reno, Rude, and Tseng (The Turks)

In the original? Yes

FF7 characters - Reno

These enigmatic agents make up Shinra’s shady taskforce – The Turks. Although these Shinra dogs begin the game yapping at the heels of Aerith, they will no doubt have a more complicated part to play as the story unfolds.

President Shinra and Heidegger

In the original? Yes

FF7 characters - President Shinra

In the latest trailer, we caught a glimpse of the big-bad president of the Shinra corp, as well as his right-hand man, Heidegger. Expect these two to hatch some downright devious plans to thwart Cloud and his crew.

Roche

In the original? No

FF7 characters - Roche

The first new character we’ve got a glimpse of is this be-quiffed rogue. We don’t know much about him yet, but that SOLDIER-like attire spells trouble for our heroes.

Don Corneo

In the original? Yes

Don Corneo is a yakuza-style crime boss in the pocket of the Shinra Corporation. You might have to think outside the box to outsmart this creep.
