The Breath of the Wild sequel feels a lot like Majora’s Mask already

Have you seen how dark and spooky the The Legend of Zelda: Breath of Wild sequel looks in its announcement trailer? At one point, a dusty corpse comes back to life and looks right at us with glowing red eyes. Terrifying.

Looking at this trailer, there’s good reason to think that the upcoming Nintendo Switch sequel will be to Breath of the Wild what Majora’s Mask was to Ocarina of Time. In other words, it looks like it’ll be set in a weirder and gloomier version of the world that we got to explore in the Zelda game that came before it. Not to mention it has a real sense of doom about it.

Breath of the Wild was colourful and upbeat throughout. It felt like a conscious effort to rediscover the playfulness and wonder of nature that made the original Zelda games so pleasant. Not so in this sequel, though – might as well call it Death of the Wild. In the trailer, we see Link and Princess Zelda entering an ancient dungeon where some dark ritual seems to be taking place. There’s a dark essence creeping across the floor and it’s frightening the poor rats.

As the adventurers get further in, they see runes written across the walls, a small lake lined with glowing crystals, and then that corpse shows up. We don’t know who this rotten husk lined with golden jewellery is, but they’re obviously very important to the sequel’s story – possibly a new power source for Ganon?

What we can see is that the dead person is being grasped at the chest by a long, magical arm that’s coming down from above. It’s this mysterious arm that seems to resurrect the corpse at the centre of the room and, presumably, in the process reawakens some ancient evil. That explains why we then see a dark cloud erupt under Hyrule Castle. And is it taking off into the sky, too?

With all the evil imagery, plus the eerie sounds of the trailer’s music, it all feels similar in tone to Majora’s Mask. To remind you, that was a game that gave you three in-game days to figure out how to stop the moon crashing into the planet and killing everyone. Scary stuff. And the whole time, the moon and its giant creepy grin grew bigger and bigger in the sky as it drew nearer.

But the atmosphere isn’t the only similarity between this Breath of the Wild sequel and Majora’s Mask, as they both seem to have similarly speedy development times.

Majora’s Mask came out in 2000, just two years after Ocarina of Time – that’s a very quick turnaround for a full-on RPG with lots of interesting ideas. It was possible because Majora’s Mask made use of much of the same tech and gameplay foundations as Ocarina of Time. With that part of the development freed up, the team were able to pour more time into creating the story, coming up with new mechanics, and filling dungeons with puzzles.

It’s safe to assume that this new sequel is being made using the same tech and will share many gameplay foundations with Breath of the Wild. That could be why Nintendo have already got far enough into development to announce the game and even give us our first look at it. Breath of the Wild came out in 2017, just two years ago, so it’s already looking like it’ll be able to rival that quick two-year development time of Majora’s Mask.

In any case, we can’t wait to see and hear as much as we can of the Breath of the Wild sequel, even if we’re a little scared. Hopefully it won’t be long until it arrives.
