So without further ado, here are 5 new things we spotted in the trailer for DOOM Eternal, which was shown off during Bethesda’s E3 conference. Don your helmet and let’s get started!

If you missed the trailer the first time around, or you just want to refresh your memory, here it is again in all its gory glory.

The Meathook

About halfway through the trailer we see the DOOM Slayer brandish a nasty-looking hook, which he uses to grapple onto a hapless Cacodemon and swing across a gap.

This is the new Meathook, which can be used either to reel you in towards enemies for close combat, or to get you swinging, Samus-style.

Heaven awaits

Traditionally, the DOOM games offer a tour of hell for some extended demon dicing, but DOOM Eternal seems to be promising a trip to the other place, too. “If you continue, you will bring down the heavens’ wrath,” says the unidentified narrator at one point, and we also see glimpses of what looks like an angel and bone-white buildings.

Executive producer Marty Stratton noted at the Bethesda Press conference that your crusade will take you to “locations never before seen in DOOM, from heaven and hell to the Sentinel Homeworld and beyond” – so the DOOM Slayer will almost certainly be knock knock knocking on heaven’s door.

Environmental traps

There’s a fun moment in the trailer where the Slayer shoots at a big green target near the ceiling, which lets loose a swinging scythe that takes out a Mancubus in one swipe. Hopefully we’ll see many more environmental traps like these in the finished game – and they’ll certainly be a hoot in multiplayer.

Oooh, a flamethrower

The Slayer gets a new toy in DOOM Eternal – a shoulder-mounted flamethrower that we see him using to crisp up some demons. In a similar way to how melee kills in the previous game rewarded you with health, killing enemies with the flame belcher will cause them to spit out armour shards.

The Arachnotron returns

Blink and you’d miss it, but an Arachnotron shows up for a couple of seconds towards the end of the trailer. The Arachnotron is basically a giant brain on spider-like robotic legs, and it was first introduced in DOOM II, but hasn’t been seen since DOOM 64 in 1997. Well, it’s back – and now it’s got a plasma gun. As if it wasn’t deadly enough already.
