Turns out you don’t have to be a killing machine in Cyberpunk 2077. You can get through the whole game by stunning people – with your hot looks and your tasers, presumably.

This is what developers CD Projekt Red have revealed while showing new footage of their upcoming sci-fi RPG at E3 2019.

A non-lethal playthrough of the game hasn’t always been possible. CD Projekt Red surveyed people at E3 last year, when first revealing Cyberpunk 2077, and discovered that many of them wanted the option to avoid killing in the game. The developers took that on board and have since made changes.

“Pretty much every gun, pretty much every cyberware, you’re able to use in a nonlethal way. You’re able to knock [enemies] down, choke them, make them sleep and so on”, lead quest designer Paweł Sasko told PC Gamer. “There are ways not to kill them and spare them, like the way you could do with Sasquatch, the boss.”

But there are exceptions. The bazooka cannot be used in a non-lethal way. A rocket to the face isn’t ever really going to result in anything but a lot of splatter. You could try putting a plaster on the wound but first you’d need to find your victim’s skin. Probably best to avoid using bazookas if you want to do a pacifist run of Cyberpunk 2077.

What you can do, then, is sneak up behind people and choke them out. Or you can use a gun to put them to sleep – perhaps using tranquilliser rounds, or hacking them to shut down their brain for a little while. We’re using our imaginations here and we’re sure CD Projekt Red have been too.
