E3 press conferences always have their fair share of goofy, fun moments, and 2019 was no exception.
In amongst all the amazing new game reveals (and there were an absolute mountain of those), here are a few things that made us smile.
1. There was a real-life dog in the Ubisoft show
Actor Jon Bernthal strode out during Ubisoft’s presentation to give some information on the character he plays in the upcoming Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. But all eyes were on his lovable pooch, who obediently trotted in next to him and quietly laid down while he gave his speech. Very good boy 12/10.
2. Keanu thinks we’re breathtaking
When Keanu Reeves walked onto the stage at the Microsoft press conference, it was A MOMENT. He went on to describe walking through the streets of Cyberpunk 2077, the game he’s starring in, as “breathtaking”, at which point a smitten audience member shouted “You’re breathtaking!” Reeling momentarily, Keanu quipped back “YOU’RE breathtaking! You’re all breathtaking!”, and everyone fell in love all over again.
3. Helen the badass OAP
Another smile-inducing moment from Ubisoft was during the gameplay reveal for Watch Dogs Legion, when control was switched to an elderly lady called Helen. She proceeded to infiltrate a police station using a spider robot, zap a cop with a stun gun, and shoot a man in the face from point blank range – and every lethal action brought her closer into our hearts.
4. The wrong Bowser
Nintendo began their E3 Direct with a wink and a nod to the fact that the new Nintendo of America president, Doug Bowser, has an improbably appropriate name for his job. Nintendo executive Yoshiaki Koizumi said that there was someone he’d like to introduce us to, then turned to see Mario’s nemesis Bowser, exclaiming “What? What are you doing here?” Not THAT Bowser, the OTHER Bowser, ho ho ho what a mix up.
5. The irrepressible joy of Ikumi Nakamura
When creative director Ikumi Nakamura took to the stage at Bethesda’s press conference, it was heartwarming to see her sheer joy at talking about the game she’s been working on, GhostWire: Tokyo. Nakamura has worked on a slew of amazing games, including Ōkami, Street Fighter V, Bayonetta, and The Evil Within, and it was a lovely, heartfelt moment to see her being so genuinely excited about revealing her new game to the world.
