Dreams arrives on 14 February, which means you don’t have long to wait until you can start building the wildest games your imagination can come up with. Just be warned: Dreams will probably take over your life.

Dreams’ creative controls take a little getting used to, but they’re incredibly powerful. You’ll need to use a combination of the buttons on your DualShock controller and its motion controls, so be prepared to wave your arms around like you’re on a rollercoaster. It’s a great workout.

A note on Imps

What is an Imp?
This cute little creature is your mouse pointer and avatar all in one. You can use it to point at stuff, select stuff, move stuff, and even possess the lifeless bodies of empty puppets like some sort of demonic overlord.

Centre your Imp onscreen
Press and hold the option button to centre your Imp onscreen. Pressing the button once will open the options menu.

Basic camera controls

Grab Cam
Normally, your camera flies freely around the environment, but the Grab Cam lets you lock onto and fly around a specific object instead. Hover over your chosen object with your Imp and hold R1.

Warp to a particular spot
Turn and look into the distance, then press L1 + R1 to instantly warp over there. It’s fun.

Warp to a particular object
Hover over an object and tap L1 to go zooming over to it.

Move the camera
Use the left thumbstick to move the camera around.

Move vertically
Hold L1 and use the left thumbstick to move up and down.

Basic creative tools

Undo
Everyone makes mistakes. Just press the left d-pad button once to go back a step, or more than once to track back through the changes you’ve made.

Redo
Undid something by mistake? Just press the right d-pad button once to redo an action, or more than once if you got a bit trigger-happy.

Move tool
Grab objects by hovering over them and holding R2, then use the left thumbstick to move them nearer or further away.

Hold R2 and use the DualShock 4’s motion controls to move objects freely, from left to right or up and down.

If you use the left thumbstick to angle the camera down at the object, or to look up at it from below, you can use R2 + motion controls to move the object back and forth too.

Let go of R2 to put the object back down.

Resize objects
Grab an object with R2, then press up or down on the d-pad to increase or decrease its size.

Clone objects
This tool lets you build flights of stairs and the like in an instant. Build an object (like a step), then hover over it, hold L1 and grab it with R2 to make a clone. Let go of L1. Next, move your cloned step up to the desired height and let go of R2. You can continue to create clones by simply pressing the right d-pad button, or get rid of them with the left d-pad button.

Rotate objects
Hold L2 and use motion controls to rotate the object’s angle.

Alternatively, hold L2 and use the left thumbstick to get greater control. Moving the left thumbstick up and down will pitch the object up and down on a horizontal axis. Moving it from side to side will pitch it from side to side on a vertical axis.
