Dark Souls 3 is considered by many to be one of the hardest games out there, but that hasn’t stopped one stalwart adventurer from getting a little exercise in the land of Lothric. In a clip posted by Reddit user SuperLouis64, he demonstrates a modded Ring Fit Adventure controller that he’s currently using to play through Dark Souls 3.

The video shows him defeating a variety of bosses, including the Dancer of the Boreal Valley, the Abyss Watchers, and Iudex Gundyr, all the while running on the spot to dodge and maintain movement.

We were so impressed that we reached out to Louis to find out more about what motivated him to make Dark Souls even more difficult for himself. “Honestly it’s mostly because of the current times,” he explains. “Being stuck inside made me start using Ring Fit Adventure, and I had a crazy idea of wondering what would happen if this control scheme can work on other games. A month or so of fine-tunning and boom – we are here.”

Louis’s modded version of Dark Souls 3 requires him to keep jogging in order to move, squeeze the Ring-Con in order to attack, and – best of all – to squat in order to drink a healing Estus.

“Overall the game wasn’t really the challenge of the run. The real challenge was keeping up with the exercise. The more tired you get, the easier it is make mistakes. And as we know, one mistake in Dark souls can literally be life or death in-game!”

It’s not the first time Louis has tackled tough games in unconventional ways either. He’s previously beaten Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice using nothing more than a set of bongos from Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. “Any game that interests me will usually get a weird controller mod treatment,” Louis tells us.

“I’ve done this with games like Overwatch, Nier Automata, even Super Mario Odyssey! I’m even planning a Buster sword controller for Final Fantasy VII Remake (whenever my parts come in). As for why I do it, It’s mostly for fun. It’s a mix of doing something creative and problem solving which I find to be very fun. It also helps that somehow others find it fun to watch!”

All in all, the Ring Fit Adventure controller seems strangely well suited to Dark Souls. All he needs now is a Ring-Con action to let him praise the sun.
