You can catch the shorter version right here with us, or keep reading for a summary of five things we learned from the video.
1. Pacifica isn’t as nice as it sounds
Pacifica is the name of one of Night City’s six districts, which was intended to be a dream tourist destination but never got the funding it needed to actually become one. With many of its buildings now derelict, Pacifica is characterised by its vicious gang wars and their inhospitable approach to outsiders. Of course, that means it’s also a great place to get your hands on rare or illegal cyberware implants.
2. Your backstory will open different doors
You can choose your character’s background, and that’ll have an impact on how the world perceives you. Whether you started out life as a Nomad, Street Kid, or Corporate, you’ll have certain advantages and disadvantages in different situations, or have access to special dialogue options. That’s not to say that you can’t learn how to handle yourself in difficult circumstances, though.
3. Mix and match your character class
There aren’t any restrictions on which perks and attributes you can have. If you want to, you can become a powerful Solo combat pro, stealthy Netrunner hacker, or hardware-tinkering Techie, or you can mix and match the attributes of all three.
4. Meet some more baddies
The new gameplay introduced us to an organisation called NetWatch, who are working against Pacifica’s gangs and want to “protect people from AI anarchy originating from beyond the Blackwall” – or in other words, free AI kept behind a virtual wall that’s supposedly holding back the end of the world. While you have the option to fight NetWatch agents, it may be safer to not have them notice you.
5. See more of Johnny Silverhand
One of the standout moments of E3 2019 was the reveal of Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand, a character from the tabletop game who was once the lead singer of the fictional band Samurai. Now, he’s a “digital construct” who lives inside V’s mind, thanks to a particular cybernetic implant. He’ll accompany you throughout your adventure in Night City, but he has his own agenda, so it’s up to you to decide whether or not you’re going to trust him.
