COD Alpha

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be playable exclusively on PS4 from 23 to 25 August.

Modern Warfare producer Dino Verano announced the news during the Gamescom Opening Night Live stream, with a trailer showcasing what PS4 fans can expect from the alpha this weekend.

The alpha will give players the chance to try out the new 2vs2 mode, Gunfight, across 5 different maps. Those are: Stack, King, Speedball, Docks, and Pine. Games will see duos have to win 5 rounds, with each new round seeing your loadout randomised. So whether you’re usually a sharpshooter or spray and prayer, you’re going to have to test your skills with plenty of the game’s weaponry.

The alpha is now available to download for PS4, and to get on it, all you need to do is head to the PlayStation Store, either on your console or via this link. Once you’ve downloaded the alpha (which comes in around 36GB), you’ll be able to play Modern Warfare’s new multiplayer mode without a PlayStation Plus subscription.

Don’t worry if you’ve got plans this weekend, there will be more chances to go hands on with Modern Warfare before its release on 25 October, with two beta sessions planned for September. The first, from 12-16 September, will be exclusive to PS4, with an early access period on 12-13 September if you pre-order the game.

The second will take place from 19-23 September across all platforms, with another early access period on 19-20 for those who pre-order as well. This beta will also give us a chance to test out cross-play, which is coming to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
