No matter where you looked, 2019 was filled with huge gaming announcements, unexpected reveals, and memorable moments. And while 2020 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for gaming – thanks in part to the launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X – we wanted to take a moment to cast a fond eye back over the most exciting, surprising, or just plain fantastic moments of 2019.

So, join us as we round up some of the moments that will stick in our memories even as we careen into 2020.

Nintendo boss bids farewell

Nintendo America’s affable exec Reggie Fils-Aimé announced his retirement in early 2019, but what really broke our hearts was this heartfelt ‘thank you’ message. So long Reggie, now you’ve got all the time in the world to play Animal Crossing: New Leaf on your Nintendo 3DS.

A charming E3

E3 is perhaps the single biggest event in the gaming calendar, with developers and publishers from around the world gathering to reveal new games, breathtaking trailers, and beautiful dogs. This year’s event was also home to some unexpected wholesomeness when two charming personalities took to the stage to win our hearts. The first was Hollywood megastar Keanu Reeves, who made a surprise appearance to announce his involvement in Cyberpunk 2077. The second was a lesser-known star, Ikumi Nakamura, who charmed the audience with her chirpy introduction for Ghostwire Tokyo.

Fortnite Chapter 2 drops

We’ve spent so many hours in Fortnite Chapter 2 that it’s hard to believe the game’s big refresh kicked off only a couple of months ago. The rollout of Chapter 2 was an event in itself, as the game was dramatically sucked into a black hole and fans waited with bated breath for the new map to emerge. Besides just offering us a tonne of new Fortnite content to enjoy, Chapter 2 proved that there is a lot more Fortnite fun in store for us in the future.

So many announcements

There were so many huge announcements this year that we couldn’t possibly mention them all! The sheer volume of surprises was remarkable – we got sequels confirmed for Breath of the Wild, Overwatch, and Hellblade as well as the internet-breaking debut of Half-Life: Alyx.

The Game Awards honours the industry

This year’s Game Awards was packed full of amazing moments as awards were presented to the year’s best games, both big and small. The big winner of the night was Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, which took home the coveted Game of the Year gong.

The next-generation takes shape

After a historic year of incredible games, it’s only fitting that we end with a look forward at the next generation. Two new consoles are on the way in 2020 – the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X, both looking to expand what video games are capable of, and we couldn’t be more excited to see what lies in store.
