Gaming’s Greatest Vampires

There should be more games about vampires. Okay, so not being able to go out in the sun is a bit of a drawback, but think of all the pros that come with being undead, superpowered, and possibly able to transform into a bat.

And with cult vampire classic sequel Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 on its way sometime this year, we took the opportunity to take a look back at some of our favourite gaming vampires from over the years. They can’t all turn into bats, but they’re all extremely awesome nonetheless.

You don’t get a name, but you do get to tailor your burgeoning vampire skills in almost any way you please. However you imagine your ideal vampire – super-powerful brawler, seduction pro, or sneakiest shadow in the night – Vampire: The Masquerade lets you live out that fantasy. Oh, and you can have the most amazing dance-offs, too.

2. Dr Jonathan Reid

You have to feel a bit sorry for Dr Reid. He’s a doctor in 1918 London, so, as you might expect, his natural instinct is to try to help his patients get better. Unfortunately, he’s also a newly turned vampire, so he’s also constantly battling with the desire to stab his pointy teeth into their necks and bleed them dry. What’s a vampire doctor to do?

3. Vincent Valentine

Does Vincent count as a vampire? Well, we reckon he does, based on the fact that you first encounter him sleeping in a coffin, he’s got scary red eyes and superhuman powers, he can turn into monsters, and, er, you first encounter him snoozing in a coffin. Sounds pretty vampire-like to us. Although he was an optional party member in the original game, he quickly became one of our favourite Final Fantasy characters, and we can’t wait to see him join the cast of the remake.

4. Serana

One of the few pure-blooded vampires in Skyrim, and one of our favourite followers by far (sorry, Lydia). She also quite likes being a vampire, and you have to admire her positivity. She doesn’t half complain about hiking in the sun though.

5. Kain

Poor old Kain is just an ordinary nobleman, probably with a pretty decent life, until the day he gets brutally murdered and then resurrected as a vampire by a passing necromancer. Determined to get revenge on his killers, Kain finds himself trapped in a world filled with scarily strong vampires, demons, time-travellers, and worse. But he has handy vampire powers now (like turning into a bat), and they’re so much fun to use that you can’t really blame him for starting to quite enjoy life as the undead. Incidentally, this is a series that is crying out for a shiny new remake.
