So we’ve taken a look back at some of our all-time favourite spy games and made a lineup of five of the most talented spies in gaming. No photos please – we wouldn’t want to blow their cover…

1. James Bond

See him in: Goldeneye 007 (1997)
What list of spies would be complete without James Bond? With clever gadgets, plenty of peashooters, and enough suave one-liners to fill the MI6 library, Bond’s a classic hero in a classic game.

2. Sam Fisher

Gaming's Greatest Spies - Sam Fisher

Spot him in: Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell
If the point of a spy is to do lots of discovering without being discovered in the process, then Sam Fisher has it down to a fine art. He’s all about sneaking around in shadows and fog, grabbing people from behind, and shimmying up onto high ledges and out of sight. Because remember, bad guys never look up.

3. Cate Archer

See her in: The Operative: No One Lives Forever
Whether she’s silently infiltrating an enemy stronghold, scuba-diving to sunken wrecks, or leaping out of a burning plane, former cat burglar turned super-spy Cate Archer’s got the situation under control. Her impeccable 1960s style isn’t just for show, either – she’s got exploding lipsticks, gas-filled perfume bottles, and a miniature welding torch disguised as a lighter. And did we mention her robotic pet poodle?

4. The Spy

Gaming's greatest spies - Spy Party

See them (or not) in: SpyParty
While the Sniper scans a crowd of partygoers for signs of suspicious activity, the Spy is busy being suave and sneaky, completing their objectives as unobtrusively as possible so that the watchful Sniper’s last bullet doesn’t end up lodged in their head. Only the very best spies can keep their cool under pressure like that…

5. Harry Tipper

Best Video Game Spies - Timesplitters

See him in: the TimeSplitters series
Definitely the grooviest cat in town, there’s only one way to spot this master of disguise when he’s undercover – look out for his trademark shades and fabulous moustache. As if that weren’t rad enough already, he’s also got a supervillain (with a cat named Strudel) for an arch-nemesis. Right on.
