5 gaming sidekicks who totally deserve their own game

Heroes are cool and all, but let’s just take a minute to appreciate their amazing sidekicks too. Sure, they get their moments in the spotlight, but would it really be too much to ask for them to get a full game to themselves?

Two of our favourite sidekicks have already had a chance to step into the limelight this year, with Alyx Vance taking centre stage in the mind-bogglingly cool VR title Half-Life: Alyx, and everyone’s favourite angsty teen Ellie growing up to be even more awesome in The Last of Us Part II. And that got us thinking about some more of our favourite sidekicks who totally deserve a game of their own…

1. Atreus

Initially, we had our doubts about bringing a small child along on our super dangerous journey as the God of War (you know, there being other gods and scary monsters everywhere trying to kill us). But could we have got anywhere without him? Probably not. He’s got handy arrows to disable sneaky monsters, he can summon animal friends to help us out, and he’s even got a built-in Google Translate function. We’re pitching “God of War: BOY” as the game’s title.

2. BB

We carried BB around almost all the way through Death Stranding, and while we won’t spoil the story for you, we’d got extremely attached to our teeny little Bridge Baby by the time the ending rolled around. So how’s this for an idea: we imagine a world in which BB doesn’t live in a small yellow pod, but gets to grow up and run around in the fresh air. Preferably in a world without scary BTs, but who knows what the world of Death Stranding would look like in the future?

3. Groot

Adult Groot, Baby Groot… any version of Groot would be fine. Give us a game where we get to stomp around as a tree-man, flailing our roots and telling everyone what our name is as chaos reigns throughout the galaxy, and we’ll be content.

4. Aunt May

We’re just going to say it: without Aunt May, Spider-Man would never get anything done. Yeah, okay, he’s the one with the actual superpowers, but couldn’t May do just as good a job? We already know little old ladies can make incredible heroes (hello, Helen from Watch Dogs: Legion), so let’s give Aunt May her moment to shine.

5. GLaDOS

You know how you play as the Mastermind in Resident Evil Resistance, setting traps and making life super difficult for your test subjects? Now imagine playing as GLaDOS. Picture it: Chell desperately tries to deactivate you, while you get to throw out wry wisecracks, torture her with glimpses of inaccessible cake, and shut off portals about a second before she can go through. Bonus points if we get the Companion Cube’s origin story in there somewhere too.
