1. Peter Parker and Mary-Jane

Pete and MJ aren’t together any more by the start of the game, but hope isn’t lost for this iconic duo. Over the course of the game, Pete (who does not have his life together at all) gradually learns to give the extremely dependable Mary-Jane some space to be the hero for a change, and by the end, it’s impossible not to root for them.

2. Tidus and Yuna

On the face of it, they’re a bit of an odd couple. One’s a loud and self-absorbed celebrity blitzball player, and the other’s a pious and gentle celebrity summoner whose 9-to-5 involves saving the world. As they journey together to defeat their mutual enemy, though, you start to see that they have quite a lot in common – and by the end, they’ve both changed each other for the better. Sniff.

3. The Chiral Artist and the Junk Dealer

See them in: Death Stranding

In a game that’s all about rebuilding broken human connections, it stands to reason that there’d be a love story in there somewhere. These two star-crossed lovers were separated by a cruel twist of fate, each thinking the other one forever lost… until Sam shows up and points out that, er, they actually live pretty much next door to each other, without even knowing it. Whoops.

4. Ellie and Riley

Long before Joel arrives on the scene, Ellie sneaks out of her boarding school to meet her friend Riley, who’s been missing for weeks. The two best friends reconcile as they explore a mall left derelict by the cordyceps outbreak, and after sharing a kiss they make grand plans for their future… all of which come crashing down when the unthinkable happens moments later. Sob. Pass us the tissues.

5. Kratos and Faye

See one of them in: God of War

Faye might be dead before the story even begins, but she’s still the driving force behind Kratos’ journey, and she’s the reason we finally get to see a softer and more human side to the gruff God of War. His journey to scatter her ashes sees him both come to terms with his grief and to build up his relationship with his young son Atreus, and Faye’s presence is there with them throughout. If you don’t cry even a little bit by the end, you’re not human.

6. Elena Fisher and Nathan Drake

See them in: Uncharted

The very best romantic pairings complement each other perfectly, and Nathan and Elena have that down to a T. They’re both brave, charming, clever, and maybe a little bit too headstrong at times, but they also both know they’d be stuck without each other. Also, Elena doesn’t take any of Nate’s nonsense. Good on you, Elena.
