No hypothetical vision of the future would be complete without a smart, super-capable robot, and video games are great at giving us a glimpse at how life with robot friends might one day be. Of course, there’s always the possibility that they’ll totally outsmart us and take over the world, but we like to be optimistic.

No hypothetical vision of the future would be complete without a smart, super-capable robot, and video games are great at giving us a glimpse at how life with robot friends might one day be. Of course, there’s always the possibility that they’ll totally outsmart us and take over the world, but we like to be optimistic.

So while we wait for the day that we can have real super-powered (and definitely not evil) robot buddies of our own, we’ve curated a collection of seven iconic robots from some of our favourite games. But please stay behind the safety barrier: some of them have been known to attack humans on sight.

1. GLaDOS

See her in: Portal series

Portal just wouldn’t be the same without GLaDOS’ wry and often sadistic comments about our progress (or lack of it). She might not always have our best interests at heart, but let’s face it – our time in the Aperture Science Enrichment Center would be a lot less fun without her.

2. Connor

It makes a lot of sense to have a hyper-intelligent android helping out the cops. He can scan evidence and analyse samples on the fly, calculate the probability of the bad guy’s hypothetical actions working out, and he never gets flustered by the sight of blood. But the scientists at Cyberlife probably weren’t banking on him picking up bad habits from the humans around him, like emotions, sarcasm, and a love of big fluffy dogs. Major design flaw.

3. Working Joes

See them in: Alien: Isolation

The Alien series is great at tricking us into thinking robots are real people, but look, these robotic maintenance androids are just plain creepy. Being way out in the depths of space is frightening enough on its own without running into a grey-faced humanoid with glowing eyes. Sure, they’re helpful, but would you really feel comfortable letting them tinker with the life support?

4. Tallnecks

See them in: Horizon Zero Dawn

One of the most iconic machine types in the game, the peaceable Tallnecks are pretty much walking communication towers. Their long necks mean they get a great view of the landscape, they’re totally cool with you climbing up to get a look too, and best of all, they don’t want to kill you. If we could rig them up to transmit actual wi-fi signals in real life, we’d be totally on board with having tallnecks around for real.

5. Pathfinder

See him in: Apex Legends

Did you know that his real name is actually MRVN? Ever optimistic, the zippy Pathfinder is working hard to subvert the whole evil robot stereotype by trying to make friends wherever he goes. Of course, he’s also trying hard to kill everyone who isn’t on his team, but he’s nice underneath. Honest. He’s got a smiley face and everything, see?

6. Mettaton

See him in: Undertale

Mettaton should get a medal for the sheer amount of effort he puts into his attempts to kill you. And if you can overlook his murderous intent, you realise that he’s trying to lessen the sting by making you the star of his TV show in the process. Thanks to Mettaton, you’ll get to take part in a cooking show, a TV musical, and a quiz show. How many killer robots would offer you an opportunity like that?

7. Freddy Fazbear

See him in: Five Nights At Freddy’s series

During the daytime, we reckon we could handle Freddy. He dances and advertises pizza, and as long as we stay well away from those powerful jaws of his, we’d probably be okay. At night though? Nope. Just nope.
