Ah, if only we could get hold of video game gadgets in the real world. Yeah, magic spells and the like are cool too, but at least when it comes to gadgetry, you get the feeling it might be possible to create them for real one day. Well, okay, some more than others. Portal Guns are probably a long way off.

So let’s take a look at some awesome video game gadgets that we’ve come across recently. And if we can just figure out robots and artificial intelligence too, we’re halfway there already…

1. Nanowires

Use them in: Cyberpunk 2077

best video game gadgets cyberpunk 2077 nanowire

Quite a few of the gadgets and gizmos in Cyberpunk 2077 look pretty useful, actually, but let’s just think about the implications of nanowires for a second. Not only can you shoot these string-like tools out of your arms like some sort of android Spider-Man, you can also hack pretty much anything. Who needs to remember fifty different logins and passwords now?

2. The Russells

Use them in: Half-Life: Alyx

best video game gadgets half life alyx gravity gloves the russells

Or as normal people who aren’t Russell call them, Gravity Gloves. Never again would you have to do strange table-hugging gymnastics when your charger cable slides down between the desk and the wall. Plus you could become an instant pro at any sport that involves catching a ball. We’re on board with these becoming a reality.

3. The Sheikah Slate

Instant map, conundrum solver, camera, thermometer, and telescope all in one, and you can equip Runes to create some pretty amazing magical effects. Yeah, okay, so smartphones do a lot of the same things. Do they look even remotely as awesome? No, we didn’t think so.

4. The Odradek

Use it in: Death Stranding

We might not have scary BTs to watch out for in our world, and carrying an unborn baby around in a pod to power it seems a little inhumane too, but you can’t deny that having an early-warning system attached to your shoulder could come in very useful in times of crisis. Also, the upgraded version lets you hide inside a holographic boulder, and if you’re seriously saying you wouldn’t love to seemingly transform at random into a large rock, we won’t believe you.

5. Web shooters

6. Neuromods

Use them in: Prey

Psychokinesis, mad hacking skills, the ability to create large blobs of superheated plasma… Neuromods can give you pretty much any ability you care to dream up. Of course, there’s that tiny downside of having to stick a seriously evil needle into your actual eyeball, plus one or two side effects in your brain later, but it’s worth it, right? Right…?

7. Pokédex

best video game gadgets pokemon sword shield pokedex

But without real-life Pokémon, you cry, what use is this? It’s simple. This one’s for real life creatures, so you can simply scan that terrifying bug on your pillow to find out if it’s a problem if it bites you. And never again will you record mystery bird calls into Shazam to see if it can figure out what they are (PSA: it doesn’t work). We might’ve learned a ton of bug names from our many hours in Animal Crossing, but imagine getting an instant mini Wikipedia search on every creature you see.
