Gaming’s Greatest Dragons

There are not enough games where you get to play as a dragon. Think about it – you’d get wings, you’d never need to equip any armour, you could breathe fire at people who annoy you, and you’d have an actual legitimate excuse for breaking into every house you see, looting all the treasure you can find, and hoarding it in a lair somewhere, never to be looked at again.

And while you might not get to stretch your dragon wings very often, you’ve got to admit that these fearsome firebreathers always steal the show in games, even when they’re trying to melt you into a steaming puddle. That’s why we’ve made a list of some of our favourite dragons from the world of gaming. Have your favourites made our list?

1. Spyro the Dragon

See him in: The Spyro series

How could we have a list of gaming dragons without including Spyro? Not only is this pint-sized purple dragon a beloved gaming icon, he’s also by far one of the cutest creatures on our list. We love you eternally, Spyro.

2. Paarthurnax

See him in: Skyrim

Paarthurnax has a bit of a history of flame-grilling humans, but that doesn’t mean he’s necessarily a bad guy. After all, rather than continuing to reduce every human in sight to a smouldering pile of ash, he’s opted to hang out on top of a mountain for decades instead, offering free language lessons like a scaly Duolingo. How bad can he really be?

3. Grim Matchstick

See him in: Cuphead

Grim Matchstick might look relatively cuddly compared to some of the dragons on this list, but he’s not an easy boss to beat. Still, despite his obvious talent for repeatedly roasting you alive, the fact that he’s so clearly upset about doing it makes it hard to dislike him. You did start it, after all.

4. Ender Dragon

See it in: Minecraft

Snazzy black scales, check. Smouldering purple eyes, check. Minecraft’s Ender Dragon is definitely one of the most stylish dragons we’ve seen in gaming, and more to the point, it’s also the very first boss mob in the game.

5. Divine Dragon

As if being a colossal dragon wasn’t intimidating enough already, this one’s got lightning powers, a big swishy tail capable of flattening even the most talented shinobi, and it’s also carrying a sword the size of a bus. Right, this should be a fair fight…

6. Bahamut

Bahamut’s featured in a lot of Final Fantasy games, most recently in Final Fantasy XV, and every time he’s been flat-out intimidating. If you were a bad guy and the hero summoned Bahamut into the fray, you’d probably run away screaming.

7. Baby Smaug

See him in: Lego The Hobbit

Why play through The Hobbit as a regular old hobbit or elf when you can play as the teeny tiny baby Smaug instead? He can smash Mithril Lego bricks with his fire breath, he’s got a titchy pair of wings that don’t really work yet, and the most adorable little waddle we’ve ever seen.
